E-VOTE FAIL: I Was Unable to Cast a Vote on L.A. County's ES&S E-Voting System (Again) Today

I Was Unable to Cast a Vote on L.A. County's ES&S E-Voting System (Again) Today
Failure echoes 2008, as two different machines and at least six different failures stymie both poll workers and county officials at my own home precinct...

Two years ago, in June of '08, as I reported at the time, the ES&S "InkaVote Plus" e-vote system in Los Angeles County misprinted 4 out of 12 of my own votes.

Today, as I tried to vote on the same system, the failure was even worse. Incredibly. And not just because I'm a journalist who covers issues of Election Integrity for a "living".

I spent more than two and a half hours not casting a vote on the system before eventually I, the poll workers, and, apparently, the folks at the L.A. County Registrar's central help desk call center, simply gave up. A complete and total failure of the e-voting system for disabled voters in the nation's largest voting jurisdiction. Again. On a system the county spent millions to buy in order to comply with the federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA) boondoggle by allowing disabled voters to cast their vote independently. Complete and total failure…

Ya gotta understand, (and I know you do) you're the best person to have this happen to.

Go get 'em, Brad!

14. It's only for CA's disabled voters. 95% of the voters in CA use the fill-in-the-bubble ScanTrons.
However, I do think there could be a better way for disabled voters to cast their ballot instead of using electronic voting.

Make larger multi-page ballots, with bigger square targets, i.e. two-inches square. Then the disabled voter casts with a bigger marker.

The ballots would be hand-counted.

7. So the precinct chief's name was Hal?

Did he at any time say, "I'm sorry, Brad. I'm afraid I can't do that"?

Perhaps his mission was too important to let you jeopardize it.

You should have asked him to sing "Daisy."

At this point I think your only recourse is to find the people responsible for these machines and beat them until all they can say is, "My God. It's full of stars."

9. Thanks for that, Roy...
I rather enjoyed that comment. It was oddly satisfying, for some reason.

8. I hate those damn things
no paper trail

no assurance that your vote was recorded properly

... or at all

I think it should be illegal to hold an election without a verifiable independent paper trail. The voting franchise is too important for this BS.

10. Yikes, again!

They should know better than to keep picking on you!

But glad you are there to expose these worthless machines! Thanks for documenting everything.

11. What's the penalty for not complying with HAVA?
Clearly the county is in violation.
