Allen Enters Race for Maine Senate Seat
By JERRY HARKAVY, Associated Press Writer

Tue May 8, 6:54 PM

PORTLAND, Maine - A six-term Democratic congressman will attempt to unseat Republican Sen. Susan Collins in a race shaping up as one of a handful likely to draw the national spotlight in 2008.

Rep. Tom Allen filed papers Tuesday formalizing his candidacy; he is the only Democrat to enter the race so far. He sought to cast the election as a referendum on the Iraq war, which he called "the worst foreign policy mistake in our nation's history."

He blamed Collins, who is in her second term, for voting to support the war and to oppose a timeline for bringing the troops home.

"From the beginning, when President Bush rushed to invade Iraq, Susan Collins has supported his misguided policy. I fought to stop it. She voted for the Iraq war. I voted against it. Susan Collins continues to vote with the Republicans against a timetable to end the war in Iraq," he said in an online video.

Jen Burita, Collins' spokeswoman, said the senator is a centrist whose willingness to cross party lines presents a clear contrast to Allen's more partisan approach.<snip>

1. Centrist and bi-partisanship only buys votes in DC. Out here in the real world
those are curse words.

Go Allen!

3. I'd ask for examples.
I'd ask Burita or Collins for examples of votes where Collin crossed party lines. Prove this "centrist" philosophy or SFU.

2. Sweet! I'll be offering my time to help his campaign...
He'll need quite a bit of help from the northern half of the state where people strongly believe Collins is some sort of non-partisan hero.
