Ariz. man sent back jury summons with obscenities

Ariz. man sent back jury summons with obscenities

YUMA - A Yuma man expressed his feelings about serving on a jury in a not so nice way.

A judge issued a warrant for Timothy Michael Jones after he sent back a jury questionnaire with obscenities written in black marker.

Jones was ordered to appear in Superior Court Tuesday to explain what he did.

Instead, Jones failed to show and Yuma County Superior Court Judge Andrew Gould issued the bench warrant. Jones now faces a charge of indirect criminal contempt.

Court records show Jones was sent a jury summons last month telling him he had been randomly selected as a prospective juror along with the questionnaire.

If found guilty, Jones could be sentenced to up to six months in jail and a fine of no more than $300.

1. He probably thought it was the US Census form.
Teabaggers aren't all that bright.

5. Could be...
didn't want guvmint intruding into his life. But if he's such a law abiding Constitution loving patriot, why doesn't he want to do the duty of a citizen?

3. Don't mess with people who can order your arrest.
Regardless of the reason, insulting a judge via jury summons is just pretty goddam stupid.

4. No kidding.
As inconvenient as jury duty usually is, I do it and don't whine about it. I think it's fundamental to our judicial system. I've found that the "ladies" taking care of the jurors are very respectful of our time and do their best to make us comfortable.

6. I see it as a fundamental duty of citizenship.
Certainly not something to get all pissed off about. It is what it is.

I served on a two-week murder trial once. It was interesting. Of course, my work hated that I was gone, but . . . it worked out.

8. Absolutely. Our courts here are always helpful and considerate, and
really it's not that difficult. A basic civic duty...

9. Ours too.
They have a website you can check the day before to see if you really need to show up. If you're outside the range of numbers, you're off the hook.

10. stupid
If you don't want to do jury duty, just show up and get kicked off.

To get kicked off quickly, it's best if you demonstrate intelligence, have something to do with psychology as a career, or work for a university.

If that fails, just say you don't believe in the jury system. Worked for me. I don't believe in calling juries for civil cases. Let "Judge Judy" decide. It is a waste of time and money for all concerned. A travesty. I don't believe that "justice" is NEARLY as good as if Judge Judy decides. That's what she is paid to do. Half the time in civil cases, the jurors resent being there the whole time and it's miserable for all.

In criminal cases, you must have a jury.
