I normally stick to the lounge, and I normally post crap, but now...
I just looked at a poignant thread with many pictures of the oil disaster effects. There was a pic in that thread, three (I think) oiled pelicans. I've just spent a few minutes looking into their eyes.

KO just showed some type of bird (could not tell what kind...too covered with oil)...it was still alive, covered in that tar-like oil, and struggling to breathe.

Tears are rolling down my face... I do not believe that I have been as distraught over a disaster before.

Animal suffering tends to impact me more than human suffering...it has to do with the innocence of animals and the fact that the only thing they need from man...is for man to leave them the fuck alone.

When and if this ever ends, I wish that the specific individuals involved feel agony for what they have done to these creatures. And then, I wish that these individuals rot in hell.

30. The sad truth is that even after being cleaned these birds are pretty much as good as dead
by then they have ingested crude oil either by ingesting water (hard not to when you are a marine species) or they have ingested fish tarnished with oil, which is highly toxic.

For the most part, the clean up efforts of birds are more effective as providers of footage for soap dish commercials than they are in actually saving the animals. It helps us put our minds at ease, but those animals are condemned from the moment they were affected by the crude oil once it enters their system, regardless of how shiny and clean their feathers end up being.

:-(

I read something from a person who helped clean oil off birds, and even though the birds looked great, they ended up dying soon after because of the oil they ingested.

I'm sure they end right back up in the oily environment they were found in. BEYOND fucked.

65. I believe they're being moved to a wildlife sanctuary
In Florida. Good thing the oil won't be following them there. But as has been said already, contact with the oil + dispersant = death or at least sterility. Not to mention loss of habitat and that a lot of marine species feel compelled to come back to breed where they were born... in the Gulf.

77. My 16yr old son who is very active regarding the spill..
...who fished and played in those waters told me today that many animals have had to simply be put down. (not sure where he saw it). I was crying 2weeks in before it hit the shore. Then it did and I cried for days. That photo broke me into tears again. It hurts to know that despite our demands for over 40yrs for clean energy that it was never enough. We failed.
The right likes to point blame outwards and it's true BP, Big Oil and enablers are mostly at fault however I too feel responsible. I'm hardly petroleum free, not today and not tomorrow.
Cried and told the kids sorry, sorry we didnt do enough to protect the Gulf coast for them. This summer (we live in Florida North East) taking my kids to Clearwater and The Keys - National Parks, not theme parks. Want them to see it before its completely gone.

Cheers
Sandy

German newspaper yesterday that these birds will not recover and it's best to put them down as painlessly as possible. They have been too poisoned. This advice came from groups who had experience with spills in the North Sea.

I know how you feel about animals....I can't look at the pictures. It just makes me bawl and then I get so angry.

hadn't seen any TV in a while.

Five of us at a friend's sharing pizza, nice time, then i see Tony Haywad and i blurt out "Oh, Fuck You!"

Which was followed by some more cursing and ranting until the host changed the subject by inviting us to visit one of his exotic pets.

i don't know how people can subject themselves to that propaganda 24/7, but I see how it placates and soothes the masses for real...that's all I'm saying

I would shoot myself if I started buying the bullshit they're selling

I'm getting to the point where I think I can't take the sight of these poor suffering creatures much longer. How to describe my own thoughts and feelings? I'm not usually one to be at a loss for words, but find myself now stuck in such a morass of helplessness, anger, anguish and dread that I find it hard to articulate what is happening. Such a catastrophe.

Thank you for a post that states so well what many of us feel and think.

13. I spent an hour outside today running errands
The smell of crude oil was so strong and there was a brown haze in the sky. Tonight although it is almost 8 pm and still 89 degrees, I am sipping hot tea because I have a horrible sore throat and my sinuses are inflamed. I have a doctor's appointment in the morning (scheduled previously) and I am going to be sure to have my doctor look at this.

19. + INFINITY!
This affects me every day as I look out my window at spring in the sierras, and think anbout my birds and squirrels and trout and what I would do if they were dying... I see the pics or the footage and weep, it comes from the depths of my heart & soul.

My daughter was reading/watching the news with me this morning on AP and she pleaded with me to turn it off because she was crying...i told her she had to know what was happening in the ocean, because her generation would STILL be figuring out how to clean it up...

As much as i realize that we can't save them all, I am horrified that this is but a sliver of the reality of death that is yet to come. I think we are all about to find out how much phytoplankton have to do with ALL of our lives...and the poor dolphins are heartbreaking, they are so smart, i bet they would be trying to get around this muck and still be engulfed by it

I want horrific things to happen to the culprits too, they should all be forced to sit up to their necks naked in this for a week...and see how sick they get...
but whatever the consequences for them, the real issue *IS* the environment, the wetlands, ocean and animal losses. I agree it is the worst part of this entire thing...

Not only is it the innocence of animals that breaks my heart, but the fact that they are helpless and really can't protect themselves from our murderous actions. Also, the fact that they have no idea what's happening to them. It makes me feel almost claustrophobic when I think about it. We may deserve the hell we've created, but animals don't.

I'm having a hard time looking at the coverage of the oil disaster. It makes me feel sick when I think about all of the wildlife that is literally suffocating to death in the disgusting poisonous oil. And I can't help but think of the long term health effects that will be suffered, especially by the children, that live in the gulf coast area. If this administration had any guts it would dismantle BP and make an example of them, and our Congress would pass such stringent laws that corporations worldwide would be afraid to recklessly pollute within US borders, but I realize that is a pipe dream and will never happen.

the oil gushing is like her life blood gushing out, a wound. I ache thinking about it. Yes these pictures of the wildlife struggling to survive covered with oil is heartbreaking. All of it is heartbreaking. It will be greed or Man's aggression that destroys the world, or both.

59. We have no right
to do this to other creatures just so we can have cheaper oil.

There is no reason that we should do this except greed. Hell is not bad enough for these people.

60. +1000 . The suffering of those birds...
There was a guy on Fresh Air (NPR) today, talking about how, for years, the oil companies were given free rein to regulate themselves. Insane!

And Cheney was right in the thick of that. Yes, I hope they rot in hell for what they've inflicted on those innocent animals.

64. Some can't look away, we must bear witness if we can without losing our minds
Louisiana was just recovering from Katrina, looking forward to better days ahead then this happened. This is far, far worse. I say that as somebody who lived in LA until after Katrina.

I don't think any of us know whether the government will be able to make BP 'make it right.'The administration is not revealing any methods they plan to use, are they? I think it's impossible. I grieve for the loss of wetlands and beautiful creatures. I grieve for people who have lost their livelihoods and may lose their way of life forever.

I'm appalled that the government wants people who may not be able to even have incomes take out Small Business Administration loans. That just adds to the financial burdens of victims. That happened to people (including my DH) after Katrina. Broke, after a disaster, people will do anything to get some cash. But in this case BP is supposed to be paying and they are not being made to do so. BP cannot be trusted to fairly pay claims. Where is the oversight?

66. You are not the only one that wishes the greedy bass turds...
...ill will. I think that there are many of us. You can include me. I want them to suffer as much pain, as they have made all of the animals they made to suffer. I want it to happen slowly, over a very long period of time, and there be nothing that they can do about it.
No, they should not rot, but rather whither and suffer, as the animals that died in the Gulf have suffered.

The sadness is overwhelming. This was caused by Greed pure and simple. Obama get this country off of oil now or get out of the way and let somebody that will get this country off of oil take the Lead.

79. you got that right...I cry every time I see one of the photos and find myself avoiding them
I knew it would be like this..and it will get worse when the birds cant migrate..and seeds dont get naturally dispersed..and sea life in california is ultimately contaminated as well..heartsick over this mess we've created...I also dont like that Obama said the gulf will recover..how does he know?..he doesn't..and recover when?..certainly not until they stop the spewing volcano..and then how long until another disaster like this?...we must change the way we think about oil..even if its uncomfortable..

83. I totally agree, no one knows what the true impact of this mega
disaster will be. What should be happening. Obama should have taken the lead, Effective immediately the US government will take control of all oil production in the US. Oil will be rationed to consumers, cost of the gasoline will be consistant with family income level i.e., If you make less then 50k per year you pay two Dollars a gallon, 50-75k, $3, 75-100 $6, 100-125 $10, etc the rich will pay enormous amounts for gasoline and the income that the government receives from this fuel sale will be the money used as a catalyst to transition all gasoline fueled cars to alternative sources. Goal 2020 no more gasoline powered vehicles will be manufactured or sold in the USA.

This simple plan solves everything. No more war for oil, no more drilling catastrophe, reduced global warming, we will again lead the world and necessity being the mother of invention will result in a smart person figuring out how to power our transportation devices on something as simple as pure water.

You're right, all those animals needed was to be left alone. When I look at those pictures I can't help but want to hurt the people responsible. And yes, I mean physically harm them. Short of that I would love to take from them their most valued possessions and force them to experience long-term emotional distress. What they've done is unforgivable.
