A 2009 accident caused by a trolley operator sending a text message to his girlfriend resulted in the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) banning even carrying a cell phone while operators were on duty. Unfortunately, that applies even if you are lucky enough to win a job lottery, as a recent MBTA hire found out.
---------------------
The unnamed driver beat out thousands of job applicants for work as a Boston bus driver.
It was a lottery encompassing 27,000 people, conducted to fill 34 vacancies. MBTA General Manager Richard Davey said on Wednesday that the new driver was seen using a cell phone at a training site. When he noticed a supervisor approaching, the trainee reportedly closed it quickly and got on a bus.
The unnamed employee's firing took place less than a week after his hiring. When the ban was first proposed last year, Davey said there would be a zero-tolerance policy with regards to the cell phone use.
