There was a 3 episode arc, The Forge, Awakening and Kir'Shara that had a very timely (back then) storyline.

A Vulcan leader insists that another race, the Andorians are preparing for war. They have a weapon of mass destruction and their intelligence confirms it. They want to do a pre-emptive surgical strike with minimum loss of life. I thought it was pretty well done and seemed quite appropriate.

Also they talked about the Vulcan prophet who's original words were lost but were written down by followers to teach others. The Captain laughs. T'Pol asks if he finds it humorous. He says no, just very familiar.

1. Wow, It's almost as if the show were produced in 21st century america by 21st century americans.
Proof once again that all fiction is about the times it is produced in, not the times it is set in. Remember the Space Hippies and Vietnam analogies from TOS?

If they were on the air now there would be some kind of disaster in space leading to a spill that filled the sky with black ooze.

9. V stinks up the room
And that is even putting aside the ABC style propaganda. It stinks on a far more basic level than the politics, they made mistakes that only rookies could make. They made an arc impossible. They created a sigh, a shrug, and switch of the channel.
Caprica, on the other hand is fraking genius. All the right choices, all the way to the foundation. An engine that can run smoothly across an arc that the creators can see, and feel. My favorite.

8. Science Fiction has long been used as a way to do commentary
Edited on Thu Jun-10-10 08:12 AM by AllentownJake
without identifying who you are doing commentary about.

It is a take off of what was done during the Enlightenment. Candide and several other works were about real insitutions Voltaire chose not to point to in fear the institutions would try to kill him.

Rod Sterling used the Twilight Zone to make shows that he could have never done without being labled a communist sympathizer and black listed had he used who he was talking about or what institution he was talking about.

Non Science Fiction see the Crucible or Shakespeare's history plays.

11. Let's not forget the season-long arc about the Xindi that was basically GW in space.
Archer tortures prisoners, loots civilians and leaves them to die, all justified by an attack on earth. (not to mention how silly it was that the Xindi tested their earth-destroying weapon on earth.)

I liked the show, but Bacula's character got annoying. It seems like the hot Vulcan is right in every episode, and Archer always ignores her, and never seems to learn from the experience that maybe he should listen next time.

13. Did you watch The Next Generation?
One of the episodes from TNG, is about a planet who biologically alters its "warriors" to send them off to war to "protect" them from the enemy and then banishes them to a prison planet when the now programmed to be hyped-up, war-like, and violent men return from the war. The warriors are considered too dangerous to live in the general population and so have been discarded.

As others have noted, much fiction can be subversive. Why do you think it is that learning is under attack? Those who read the classics, who read history, who read Sci-fi and other forms of "fiction"-as-political/social-commentary, who read mythology and fables, are informed of the "human condition" and the systems in place to subvert and oppress. Orwell and Huxley and Atwood were in-your-face warnings; sci-fi (among other genres) is subtle and entertaining.
