Response during our book club - this girl gets it

I work with a local mentoring group. This summer we are reading "the Diary of Anne Frank." The kids are going into 7th & 8th grade. $ of the 5 are Hispanic descent.
We started today. I warmed them up with some discussion of targeting laws and rules to certain groups etc.
To see if they understood this is still happening I asked if anyone could think of anyplace in the world where a group has laws or rules aimed specifically at them.
12 year girl pipes up immediately and says "Arizona." I was kind of surprised. I asked her if she could explain. She said "if you look like you may be hispanic and you don't have documents they'll (who? - the cops) will lock you up, even if you were born here."

BTW - 2 kids parents from El Salvador, 1 from Mexico, 1 from Texas and one local heritage. Not all latinos in the US are from Mexico.

My ten year old picked Anne Frank for her "famous person" project in school. It
was a very emotional experience for her and for her father and I--who tried to
teach her about the Holocaust. We even watched PBS's movie on Anne Frank, and
my husband and I sobbed at the end when they took her away.

I'm glad that you have taken on this subject and that you are mentoring these kids.

I also agree that Arizona is frightening. It's deplorable. Who are we to think that
"it can never happen again." It is happening again. Before the AZ laws changed, I
was so upset at how right-wing radio demonizes Hispanics. The neocons are collectively
trying to dehumanize and marginalize these people--similar to how the Iraqis were
disparaged during the Gulf War. I think the immigration issue is merely a tool
for these Fascists to incarcerate Hispanics. If they really cared about illegal
immigration, why not fine the companies that hire them? They don't want to stop
it, but they do want to be able to incarcerate them.

We live in dangerous times.

Thank you for educating the younger generation on these issues. I'm sure it's
very rewarding and also challenging. I still don't know how to tell my children
how messed up the world really is.

if you look north african and dont have papers the cops will lock you up til they find out who you are, even if you, your parents, and your grandparents were born here. As I am white the police have never stopped me in an official identity control, even thought I was speaking a foreign langugage (english) and the people they stopped who were tan (north african) were speaking perfect Parisian french.....

I was expecting that this question would be a hard one to draw an answer on.
This directly affects them or there family.
I will make a point that isolating the 'other' is happening daily around the world.
