Documents show US had propaganda campaign plan two months before invasion

Published: Wednesday May 9, 2007

Months before the US invaded Iraq, Pentagon planners were developing an elaborate propaganda campaign to ensure US government-"approved" information was broadcast to the Iraqi public, according to a previously classified White Paper released Tuesday by the independent National Security Archives.

The White Paper, prepared in January 2003, lays out plans to install American-friendly media with an Iraqi face and to silence local anti-US news outlets, referred to in the paper as "hate media." Also released by the National Security Archives were a Power Point presentation outlining the goals of the media plan and other briefing materials.

Transformation of Iraq’s media would be accomplished by a Rapid Reaction Media Team, which planners envisioned as a bridge between the state-controlled outlets of Saddam Hussein’s regime and a long-term “Iraqi Free Media” network, which would broadcast America-friendly programming.

"This team will deploy from Washington immediately upon cessation of hostilities … and begin broadcasting and printing approved USG information to the Iraqi public," the paper says.

1. Since they have been working on invading Iraq
since before 9-11, I am surprised that is is only 2 months before the invasion.... They were making their plans as soon as the planes hit those buildings, I guarantee you....

2. well, yeah
I mean, you wouldn't expect them to go into this without a post invasion plan, would you? Wait...

I find it fascinating that they were on the ball re: propaganda, but were that stupid concerning the Iraqi reaction to invasion.

3. Yep, we discussed a lot of this before-it was dismissed as tinfoil
Here's an archived thread that is valuable for prosecutors, researchers and historians.

4. Hasn't this already been proven and discarded by the media as irrelevant?
I continue to hear that the end justifies the means no matter the cost of innocent lives, the more I read about the destuction that we are leaving in our wake in the middle east the more I am stunned why there is not more of an outcry against this war from all politicians both repub and dem, bottom line is that simply because one has strong political ties to one organization does not leave them exempt of the simple fact that we are ALL americans and should all be properly horrified at what has been and is occurring in this "BOGUS" war on terror theme...how can our leaders possibly sleep at night?.

The facts of how the Tigris river in Baghdad is so poluted with not only human waste, trash, and piles of bodies that it is impossible to utilize this once highly used water supply for the public should be of greater concern to those pretending to care about freeing a once oppressed people from a dictatorship, even Saddam had laws concering the poluting of this river realizing how important it was to the survival of the Iraq people, we are helping to destroy a people, the very ones we are claiming to protect, it is stunning that our leaders will not address this fact.

5. What, they actually had some kind of plan prior to going in there?
Can't be.

6. This seems moderate considering Bush had started redirecting troops ...
... to the Iraq mission early in 2002, more than a year before the invasion -- and months before the authorization -- using funds allocated for the fight in Afghanistan.
