Boehner: Government--i.e. Taxpayers--Should Help Pay For Oil Spill

Congressional Democrats and the White House are toying with different ways to force BP to cover the costs of damages from the Gulf oil spill. But they face stiff opposition from industry...and it seems leading Republicans. In response to a question from TPMDC, House Minority Leader John Boehner said he believes taxpayers should help pick up the tab for the clean up.

"I think the people responsible in the oil spill--BP and the federal government--should take full responsibility for what's happening there," Boehner said at his weekly press conference this morning.

Boehner's statement followed comments last Friday by US Chamber of Commerce CEO Tom Donohue who said he opposes efforts to stick BP, a member of the Chamber, with the bill. "It is generally not the practice of this country to change the laws after the game," he said. "Everybody is going to contribute to this clean up. We are all going to have to do it. We are going to have to get the money from the government and from the companies and we will figure out a way to do that."

So today I asked Boehner, "Do you agree with Tom Donohue of the Chamber that the government and taxpayers should pitch in to clean up the oil spill?" The shorter answer is yes.

edit to add:

We have the money to bail out BP but not for Healthcare?

1. No problem.
BP can pick up the first $150 billion in damages and we'll think about the rest.

2. Note to the Idiot Boehner: YOU ARE THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.
Edited on Thu Jun-10-10 04:44 PM by AndyA
How long have you been "serving" the people of Ohio? What have you done to FIX the Federal Government you so frequently complain about?

Were you "fixing" it when you handed out bribes campaign donation checks from the tobacco industry ON THE FLOOR OF THE HOUSE MOMENTS BEFORE A VOTE ON...WAIT FOR IT...THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY?

You are corrupt, John Boehner. You are a racist, a homophobe and a spray tan addict.

RESIGN, ALREADY. If you haven't been able to "fix" that AWFUL, HORRID Federal Government by now, you'll never be able to. Step aside and give someone who's intelligent and fair a chance.

Edit to add: It's been 20 years. That's how long Boehner has had to fix that Gawd-awful, mean, nasty, wasteful government he complains about so frequently. And now, HE IS THE PROBLEM.

RESIGN!

Why shouldn't BP pay for this? It's their mess! I don't give a shit about the rich losing stock value. Stocks carry risk.

8. Excuse me, Mr. Boner
The law does require BP to pay the full cost of the cleanup.

So, it's you who want to change the law.

Oh, and the average American has more to fear from the US Chamber of Commerce than he does from Al Qaida.
