NASHVILLE – The Tennessee legislature adjourned its 2010 session early today after
the stunning failure of a top Republican priority: an attempt to block key provisions of the federal health reform act in Tennessee.
The months-long battle over how to challenge the federal health act enacted by Congress early this year fizzled out shortly before midnight when the House fell six votes short of adopting an agreement negotiated by House and Senate conferees, effectively killing the effort for the year. The two chambers had both passed competing bills that had brought tea party activists who oppose the federal law to the State Capitol on several times during the legislative session. Both chambers must pass identical bills for it to become law.
It ultimately became a stalemate between two Republican women running for the same state Senate seat in this year’s legislative elections, Sen. Mae Beavers and Rep. Susan Lynn, both of Mt. Juliet.
