House clerk just read his letter of resignation before the House. Did we know this was coming? Apparently he's taken a position at the head of a Massachusetts institution of higher learning.

5. Representatives aren't replaced by governors
the seat remains vacant until an election is held.

3. Here's the announcement
http://www.house.gov/apps/list/speech/ma05_meehan/NR070509resignation.html

I'm pretty shocked - that's not the kind of job an 8 term Congressman takes without being booted out of office.

Still, it shouldn't be hard to replace him with a Democrat.

Seriously, it's a pretty sweet gig.

8. He's really, really wanted to run for Senate for a long time
But there won't be any MA Senate seats opening up for several more years. Kennedy was just reelected in 2006, and Kerry has announced that he's running for reelection in 2008.

10. It sure is the type of job to take
He doubles his salary and completes his pension in state government at a really high salary, when you couple that with the 5 million dollars the King of Campaign finance has amassed, it is a pretty great job. No more commuting to DC, one house, one car, he gets a lot richer and his life with a young wife and two young children gets a lot easier.

7. Yes. He announced this in March
A very vigorous race is underway to select a Democrat in a primary to be held this fall to replace Marty.

9. Old news up here
Meehan is going to be the new president of UMass-Lowell. Meehan grew up in Lowell and earned his bachelor's degree at that fine academic institution (it's my brother's alma mater, too).

There are some very solid Democratic candidates in the race, including Nikki Tsongas, the widow of the late, great Paul Tsongas; State Rep. Barry Finegold of Andover; and Lowell City Councilor Eileen Donaghue. The GOP has come up with a potentially strong candidate, too, a fellow named Oganowski, whose brother was a pilot killed on one of the 9/11 flights. He seems like a relatively moderate Republican, more in the Weld/Cellucci/Swift mold than the national GOP.
