Vital Electric Fusion: Proven, Safe, Cheap

Energy device in funding limbo for two decades -- dying on the vine for lack of nuclear weapons potential.

by Ed Ward, MD
Edited by Sterling D. Allan

US Physicist Dr. Robert W. Bussard has produced proven, consistent, working prototypes of a fusion device that does not need to release neutrons as part of the fusion process.

Neutrons induce radioactivity to their immediate surroundings. Bussard's method does not do this.

This just one of the major drawbacks of other fusion projects such as the Tokamak project. The massive (30 meters X 110 feet) Tokamak/ITER project (D-T/Deuterium - Tritium) fusion reaction produces about 20 million units of energy mostly in the deadly neutron (neutral charge) production and requires gravitational strength containment/compression.

In contrast, Bussard's Inertial Electrostatic Confinement (IEC) Fusion reaction produces about 10 million units of energy per reaction, requires much weaker electric forces/fields for confinement of the reaction and is only about 2% of the size (about 15 X 12 feet) of the Tokamak reactor.

3. Thanks for staying on top of the fusion prospects, FogerRox!
Sometimes it seems like it's the ultimate Hail Mary pass for saving the world economy, but it's not impossible.

Looking forward to driving with Mr. Fusion!

5. Not just saving the economy
I think such a reactor could also be used as a high speed space drive.
That could save humanity.

6. Here's Bussard's long lecture to Google employees
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1996321846673788606&q=bussard+fusion&hl=en

Over an hour an a half long, this video details the device mentioned in the article as well as the technological hurdles that had to be overcome, and includes a short Q & A at the end.

10. I wouldn't say silenced, but
Governments and corporations tend to gather momentum, which makes it hard to change course quickly. Corporations are looking at the bottom line maybe 1 yr from now, not 20 or 50 yrs.

14. Hmm.
My sweetie said that back in the 60s he figured out how to make flat screen TVs and he is looking forward to a rocket that uses an X-ray laser for propulsion, but American business is into Cheapthink, and doesn't invest in R&D.

He thought up some other innovative stuff that his rectum of a thesis adviser wouldn't let him write his thesis on. Strangely enough, the guy's name was

Dr. Moran!!!
