It's a pity that more of today's religious fundamentalists don't follow his example

3. I remember it well.
I was stationed at an Naval air base in Texas when Madam Nue landed at the field to spend some time with a rich Texas oil man...and while on this trip her husband was overthrown.
Big money always seems to like dictators and tyrants.

5. I also remember this well
As I recall, the government of South Vietnam that was repressing Buddhists was largely made up of Catholics, who had experienced repression under the communist government of North Vietnam. Hundreds of thousands of Catholics--many of them well-educated and upper class--had fled to the South to escape communist rule and repression.

While the Buddhists were pacifists who opposed the war, the Catholics were fiercely anti-communist and were a major force for the war.

In Army training in 1968 I roomed with an ARVN officer who was Catholic. His family had escaped from the North after suffering a great deal under communist rule, and he was virulently anti-communist. He was training in the U.S. while recuperating from combat wounds, and he couldn't wait to go back to the fighting. When he did go back, he was wounded again and released from the Army for disability.
