We've exchanged blisterting e-mails for years. He's a diehard wingnut, but educated and will go through the pretense of listening to opponents although never to the point of conceding anything.
A couple of days ago I blasted Shrub to him for the umpteenth time, over that pesky torture thingy, but raw to the max, reducing everything to Shrub's pathology, bottom line his being a stick-a-firecracker-up-frog's-ass thug. I said he was Saddam without the courage to perform his thuggery totally out in the open. He let this pass, but when I sent him PELOSI's saying we would stop blaming Shrub when Shrub's problems go away, he responded with, "Look, (given name), (Shrub) and his pals spent us into disaster but OBAMA and his pals are making it FAR WORSE!"
He and I never use each other's given names, so this showed real desperation, but what he wants is for me to concede something critical of Dems to him.
I'm going to reply with this:
Look, do you think your fear for the future makes Shrub more palatable? You always slide past the moral and ethical questions about him. You and I both know that if you could vote for Shrub again, KNOWING ALL that we know now, you WOULD DO IT AGAIN. Obama wasn't my primary choice, but he became my choice almost immediately upon the primaries' ending, and I became enthusiastic without qualification. As a Yellow Dog, I will criticize fellow Dems on specifics, but keep my allegiance intact for the general sweep of the Democratic individual. When the person at the top disappoints me, I take solace that as a Dem he or she will be appointing thousands of policy makers up and down the vast line and that this will be very important over the long haul. I am now more supportive of OBAMA than some of his original boosters, and you will never get me to toss Shrub or any other Rethug any sliver of a bone.
