Poll question: Racist or not...YOU decide.
Edited on Fri Jun-11-10 02:25 PM by Behind the Aegis
Imagine the following was said:

You were never a slave. So don't try to guilt me over that. My hands are clean and I'm on the side that freed the slaves. It's wearing thin and soon will be entirely worn out. The world can only cry so hard for so long before we have to say, Oh just get the hell over it.

Would you think the above statement was....

(EDIT TO ADD: This is not to determine if the SPEAKER is or isn't racist, only the comments.)

(2nd EDIT TO ADD: Option #4 has NOTHING to do with the poster who bares that name...NOTHING!)

1. That comment alone doesn't allow us to determine if that person is racist
But what it clearly is is simplistic, ignorant and insensitive.

2. Not asking if the "speaker" is racist, just the comment.

5. Isn't that a DUers username you used in poll option #4?
Which would make this poll a direct call out, which is totally against the rules....

8. Strange. I still get ANGRY AS HELL thinking about the fact that my Grandmother wasn't
allowed to vote until 1920. I take it personally.

9. Why would anyone feel the need to say that to anyone else?
Edited on Fri Jun-11-10 02:28 PM by CBGLuthier
What did somebody do to deserve having that said to them? I can't really imagine.

10. Well presumably it's a response to a discussion on affirmative action or reparations?
I mean the phraseology only makes sense in those terms.

12. I try to not presume things. I like it spelled out exactly.
I would really like to know what I am supposed to imagine was said to require someone to make this remark if I am to evaluate the remark.

11. Who is being spoken to?
Because in discussions regarding race, I've several times heard the argument "Well, my Irish ancestors were abused and blocked from employment and businesses, so we know exactly what it's like for blacks, but WE MANAGED TO DEAL WITH IT!" - seriously, there's one in every discussion on racism.

This response would be wholly appropriate in response to that guy.

13. Nobody born in the US who is alive today had to endure slavery.
But the descendants of slaves still pay a heavy price for that horror. As for clean hands? Bullshit.

I've seen roadsigns in the US threatening death to blacks. One in particular stood through the sixties. How do you get over that?

14. I don't think the comment is racist, but the speaker is a bit testy, prickly and abrasive.
Edited on Fri Jun-11-10 03:09 PM by MissMarple
I get that way myself at times. And if you have European ancestors they were most likely serfs at some point. They were tied to the land and consequently, the land owner. Slavery was an economic fact of life over much of the world at one time or another. The American proponents didn't invent slavery, they just clung to it in an incredibly self involved, narcissistic way, far beyond any possible economic "use by" date. They were in major denial and quite dysfunctional. And some of them may still be with us and need to grow the *#@! up. The modern world was beginning to emerge over the horizon. It was the wrong culture, the wrong era, it was a poor fit from the beginning.

After Descartes there was definitely no turning back. Although the religious fundamentalists are still trying to do just that.

That's just my humble view.

I'm going to add that slavery and it's lingering effects have dragged us down and hold us back as a people.

18. For most people racism is the result of ignorance.
In sociology racism could also be called a pathology...

And what better way to build hate groups and armies then to infect the ignorant population with racism?

The real tragedy is how ignorant people end up being the followers of those who knowingly and covertly spread the racist disease as means to gain power.

20. Not racist, but I could change my opinion depending on what they meant by "side"
Definitely stupid, offensive, and factually incorrect - and I've got a pretty good guess what 'side' this person would have been on back when people really did have to make choices on slavery...

21. Ah jeez...
Seems this is a self-fulfilling poll. If you continue to beat people over the head with things, they are going to start beating back. At some point it ceases to matter who is right, who is wrong, who is racist, who is not... I'm ready to say "just get the hell over it" to polls that stir the shit like this.
