Just how much of a factor is al Queda in Iraq right now?

Just how much of a factor is al Queda in Iraq right now?
I remember hearing that al Queda only comprised about 2-3% of the fighting force in Iraq, and that about 90% of US deaths were from the Sunni insurgency. But it seems that I've been hearing that al Queda has been responsible for more attacks recently. I've been chalking it up to the Bush Administration pushing the al Queda line more and more to reinforce the Iraq-9/11 connection that they deny ever making. What's going on? Has al Queda been stepping it up, or is this just Bush catapulting the propaganda?

2. I think all the Sunnis have been 'morphed' into al Qaeda since the 'surge' started. With the
US death toll climbing, I think the 'powers' believe it will be better sold to the public if they died fighting al Qaeda instead of just insurgents.
