Missouri GOP rips ACORN but may have misread crucial document
The Missouri Republican Party is facing some uneasy questions after issuing a press release Thursday blasting the community group ACORN and Senate candidate Robin Carnahan.
The press release cites FBI documents uncovered by a conservative group, Judicial Watch. The documents, the party said, appear to support claims that ACORN in St. Louis was involved in a scheme to submit fraudulent voter registration cards in 2006.
"Explosive FBI documents expose ACORN conspiracy to commit fraud," the release says.
But in at least one case it appears the party -- using information on a blog called the Daily Caller -- misread or mischaracterized a key document.
Here's what the party said in the second paragraph of its release:
Notes made during the investigation of eight St. Louis ACORN workers convicted of election fraud make it clear that ACORN had launched a coordinated effort to disrupt Missouri’s elections. From the Daily Caller: According to one report, an ACORN employee (emphasis ours) said the purpose of fraudulent cards was “
o cause confusion on election day to keep polls open longer,” “o allow people who can’t vote to vote,” and “o allow to vote multiple times.”
But an examination of the actual notes shows the names of the interview subjects have been redacted. There is no proof that an ACORN employee told the FBI "the purpose of the 'fraudulent cards'" was to cause confusion....etc., as the release claims.
Indeed, it appears much more likely the notes actually come from a Republican election board worker.
