Saw a CNN (I think) report on the Gulf - birds being cooked alive...
Edited on Sat Jun-12-10 06:18 AM by Skip Intro

I can't seem to keep this out of my mind.

Some dude was standing in the waters of the Gulf, can't remember what state, but he was showing how thick the oil was and commenting that his feet were burning just standing there, and commented that the oil, being black, absorbed so much heat that when birds get stuck in this, it's not just that they are covered in oil, but that they are being literally cooked alive.

They didn't show any images of these poor animals, thank God, but I cannot get get this comment out of my head. Hadn't heard it before or since. But damn, just one small window into the horror that is going on on our southern shores. God.

1. Its hot and humid down here. 95 degree weather is why people go to the beach.

2. Has more to do with the fact that the oil detroys the birds' insulation layer
in colder weather, they'd die from hypothermia.

3. No, that is not why his feet were burning.

It was the stuff in the oil burning his skin, not the temperature as such. Crude oil is a harsh mixture of chemicals. Some of those chemical are soaked onto the skin and are now circulating in his system.

Has anyone stuck a thermometer in it to actually measure the temperature? If the birds were really being cooked, he would not be standing in it.
