Video: Florida Senator spots 40 mile long plume of thick oil “that came to surface from the bottom of the Gulf”

Senator George LeMieux … worried about a danger that’s been hidden so far and is starting to come to the surface.

Senator LeMieux arrived at Bay County’s Emergency Operations Center after an aerial tour of waters off Pensacola Beach…and the news he shared with local officials was not good. The senator says he spotted a plume of thick oil two miles wide and 40 miles long that came to the surface from the bottom of the Gulf.

“We need to bring every skimmer possible and have them steam towards the Gulf of Mexico,” says LeMieux. “We need all the help we can get.” …

“What we have to really focus on is not just our beaches, but our inland waterways,” says LeMieux. …

“Oil got into Pensacola Bay and the county commissioners didn’t hear about it from the Coast Guard – they heard about it from residents who picked up their cell phones.” Senator LeMieux says Unified Command in Mobile should reassign some of its decision making authority now that oil is threatening the Sunshine State.

1. One has to wonder who is in charge.
I know we are told the Coast Guard and/or bp. Then why is this so out of control??

6. No need to wonder
Step back and look at it critically. The multinational corporation BP is calling all the shots. Our government is subservient to them. Our government is playing David to their Goliath. And the mask of our "democracy" is being stripped away. We are allowed to pretend that we are still an empire as long as it serves those who are the actual Emperors. We lose. The Gulf loses. All the species in our soon to be dead Gulf lose. We hope to destroy BP because of this, but I have my doubts. I think Goliath wins this one.

4. This is so sad. The callousness of mankind is disappointing.
The people we trust with the power to ruin our lives is appalling.

This is a cover up right under our eyes. President Obama can do something decisive now but is not.
This gusher is a direct threat to national security. There should be openness. Reporters should be allowed to
show the devastation, not run off of beaches. That is something Obama can change right now.
People showing up for photo ops to make it look like animals are being helped and beaches are being cleaned is something Obama can change right now.

There should be a temporary White House set up at the coast. This is 2010 folks. Technology would allow our President to be basically anywhere and manage affairs in this country.

8. agreed. seems to me the Pres should hire all animal organizations and pay them to take care of the
animals quickly, paid for by BP. They would all be glad to do it.

14. There are a ton of rehabbers
ready to go but it is being run under contract to BP and the feds are coordinating much of it and no one extra is being called in. Audubon is forming it's own volunteer corp to help.

7. "We need to bring every skimmer possible and have them steam towards the Gulf of Mexico" - AGREED
“We need to bring every skimmer possible and have them steam towards the Gulf of Mexico,” says LeMieux. “We need all the help we can get.”

Why is that not happening? I really can not understand why this is not an ALL HANDS ON DECK operation.

The whole Oil industry needs to muster all hands, equipment, and resources, to the Gulf, ASAP

to begin with...

9. Last night all I saw from the oil industry were people
demonstrating because of the moratorium on deep sea drilling, lead by a screaming woman and followed on the news report by a porky gentleman with a really pronounced drawl saying something like "They don't need to be cuttin' off drillin' over this." Was on MSNBC in the early evening.

You are right. If they want to save their industry, they could pitch in and they could insist that there be enforceable standards for conducting drills.

10. Does anyone think that this is only going to affect the gulf?
I have a very bad feeling that magnitude of this spill is very great.

13. I agree with you
Prices will go up or we will import seafood.
Whole industries will shut down. Fishing, tourist, hotel etc.
I believe the storms will pick up the chemicals
and bring them inshore. Could affect crops.
I wonder about health concerns. Lasting illnesses.
The list could be endless.

18. Thanks for the reply to my almost unintelligible post.
That looked like a Palin comment. EEK!

Anyway, what I meant to say was that I think the effects of the spill will impact the ocean way beyond the gulf area.

17. Obama is hiding his head in the sand.
Soon he will suffocate from the oil in that sand.

I am amazed, no, sickened - by his indifference, ineptitude, and inaction.
