Comment: Gore sent honest message on man-made problem

Regrettably, the reception by the Express-News of our keynote speaker, former Vice President Al Gore, was disappointing.

The Express-News spent four days editorializing about the lack of media access to the vice president and squandered an opportunity to share the breadth of this conference's commitment to a sustainable future, a topic of importance to San Antonio and our nation.

Perhaps our enthusiasm was nurtured by Gore's ability to simplify the immense complexities of the problems that we all face. He urged us to be involved beyond our professional commitments as architects to become community activists. Global warming is a crisis of our own making, and we must change the idea that "we are what we build" to an ideal that values conservation of the natural realm as our paramount role.

I doubt very seriously that the full impact of his ideas would have been felt had this been an "open to the media" event. He delivered a heartfelt message to an audience of architects, stressing that this is a man-made problem and our architectural profession is in a unique position to foster a "new way of thinking."

Thank you, Mr. Gore, for your commitment on behalf of all species on our planet and for your inspired vision for a truly sustainable and exciting future.

Amen! This is one reason why he doesn't want the media at his presentations in the first place. For the most part this climate crisis is not important to them... only "getting the story" and making it political. Good for Mr. Gore for keeping them out. He is now a private citizen not their political toy and it is about time they realized that.

This was also truly refreshing to read as someone who is honestly sick and tired of seeing the references to 2008 and how he "lost" to Bush peppered through every single damn story ever written about this man and his heartfelt speeches and endeavors. If people cannot see that this is a fire in his soul by now then they don't know him.

He is talking about a REAL crisis not giving a rehearsed political speech. He is also not out here for the entertainment value of a media that did nothing but demean him previously and still does. To even think they should get the chance to once again misrepresent and mangle his words and intentions is beyond arrogance.
