Should I be worried about this? (computer related)
I opened Internet Explorer and clicked on a link in my favorites for Yahoo Finance.

The page opened normally but a "welcome Veronica" message was at the top left. I'm not or have never been a "Veronica" .... well there was one time back in college with the fish-net stockings ......

Anyway, I open the Yahoo mail and sure enough, "Veronica's" email account opens. There isn't any emails except for a bunch of requests to confirm porn site registrations going back about a month.

Hmmm

:scared:

1. Well, shit! Coinfirm the damn porn site registrations. Veronica has been waiting.
Seriously, you might have picked up some malware (and using IE, that's more likely than not). Download AntiMalware (the free version) from malwarebytes.org and run the quick scan. Be sure to check the box that tells it to update the signature file.

16. BTW
Stop using IE. Firefox would help guard you much better when you are browsing. Also, here is a great add-on... http://adblockplus.org/en/

2. Is this your individual, personal computer? If so, then you should be
very worried. If not, then someone else has logged into Yahoo and did not log out. You shouldn't be worried.

5. It sounds like spam right now
and a new wrinkle on trying to get people to pay for porn.

Try using a different browser to find out if Internet Exploder is the problem or if Yahoo is the one with the problem.

10. Doesn't sound like spam to me
Not if the system has cached the login information and passwords for the Veronica account.

Getting email for a Veronica would be one thing but going to my bank website and having it think my computer was last used by some one who I don't know (when that's impossible) would worry me. Then going to my email and having a completely separate system think I was this other person would worry me more.

A lot more.

Somehow that computer was used to access those two accounts and was set to remember the login information.

14. It could still be a Yahoo problem
which is why I suggested changing browsers. If the second browser has the same problem, it's likely Yahoo. If it doesn't, then Internet Exploder has been seriously compromised and a clean sweep is necessary, rebuilding the whole business with a clean reinstall the best idea.

The advice downthread to use a different browser is the best advice of all. While thieves are starting to target Firefox, it's still more secure than IE. Google Chrome and Opera also have had few problems.

No information about bank accounts was given in the OP, only email showing duns from a porn site.

18. Ah! You're right
I was thinking it was yahoo mail and a different finance site.

I guess I should read every single word instead of every 3rd...

7. You were doomed after the first four words, " I opened Internet Explorer"
You need to use a modern browser so you don't get these security holes.

8. After running your normal virus scan, try downloading/running this freeware...
malwarebytes anti-malware
advanced system care (and it's sister product IObit security 360).
All 3 are freeware you can download at cnet.com.

9. If no one else has used your computer then, yes
If it's not possible that anyone else has used your system to log into those accounts then I'd suggest getting on another computer, going to your accounts and changing ALL your important passwords immediately.

If it were me, I'd do a reformat and full reinstall of the OS. It's a pain in the ass but once a system is compromised it's near impossible to be sure it's secured again. It's faster and easier to rebuild than repair.

Oh and when you get it back up... Switch to Firefox. IE is no damn good.

15. I like Ubuntu's new build a lot
What I need to do is lug it in here to attach directly to the DSL modem and see if they'll speak nicely to each other.

Trying to get it to play nice with Linksys was a total bust.

19. I like the Linux
Probably going to switch my main laptop to Mint one of these days. When I feel like working with a computer at home after doing it all day at work.

Maybe some time in 2015, or when my current windows OS craps out. Probably the latter...

20. Just out of curiosity, did you try clicking on "logout" from Yahoo?

It might be a phony screen, but that might tell you if someone actually logged in as "Veronica"

21. I did not attempt to log out.
Now that you mention it, I looked at the web address and it looked a little hinky.

I re-booted after updating malware, security etc. and the page in question is gone. You may be on to something there.
