A really old dude finally gets his bachelor's degree from Oregon State
OSU gives 100-year-old Ralph Martinson his degree after eight-decade wait

Ralph E. Martinson left Oregon State University just six months shy of getting a degree in 1933 to buy into a North Portland grocery store.

Saturday morning, the 100-year-old Martinson will finish what he started 81 years ago. He plans to join more than 2,550 graduates in Reser Stadium in Corvallis to pick up his bachelor's degree.

The State Board of Higher Education recently voted to waive a 90-day notice requirement and allow the university to award an honorary degree to its centenarian alumnus.

"It is kind of nice," says Martinson, who grew up in Portland and now lives in a Longview, Wash., retirement home. "I don't think it is going to do me much good as far as work."

I'm glad for the old guy.

5. I finally got my degree in my mid forties
Up until that time, I had held traditionally "degreed positions" for 25 years. 12 years later, I'm working in an administrative position, and couldn't be happier. But still, for whatever reasons, it was important to me to get that piece of paper. I have no regrets.
