You won't believe the bumper sticker I saw today
A truck that was chock full of anti-Obama bumper stickers ("NO BAMA", etc.) had one that struck out at me:

OUT OF MY CHILD'S LUNCHBOX, MICHELLE!

That darn Marxist harpy is interfering with my right to turn my kid into a bloated, diabetic, precancerous couch potato! This is HUGH!

12. Someting tells me that truck owner...
...was him/herself a bloated, diabetic, precancerous couch potato. I feel sorry for that person's children. Both their bodies and their minds likely are being fed garbage.

6. As long as ...
... the First Lady is using persuasion, then I'm cool with her talking about what kids eat. In that case, the bumper sticker is out-of-line and fearmongering.

But, if the next step is federal legislation or education department regulations telling kids what to eat or what is "approved" for lunches, well, frankly, I wouldn't want the government in "my child's lunchbox" either.

7. there already ARE regulations and they're atrocious!
I think there should be more and better regulations! Like the one I just posted about:

http://reapfoodgroup.org/Programs-Events/farm-to-school.html

http://www.farmtoschool.org/WI/programs.htm

Wisconsin passes Farm-to-School bill

The Wisconsin State Assembly passed the Farm to School bill Tuesday creating the framework for a statewide program. A Farm to School Advisory Council will be established within the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection along with a coordinator and grant program.

The program links locally-grown food with school cafeterias, Assembly Ag Committee Chair, Amy Sue Vruwink says “it will help farmers gain access to new markets while providing students with nutritious and fresh locally grown foods.” Vruwink adds, “Farm-to-School pilot projects around the state have shown that serving our school kids locally grown food increases their consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables both at school and at home.”

The legislation was passed unanimously by the Assembly, the State Senate immediately concurred sending the bill to Governor Jim Doyle for his signature.

9. Contact Congress & make a difference!
Edited on Sat Jun-12-10 02:44 PM by xjymnastjme
You should really act on this! Obviously the states are passing or sitting on their own regulations that you're not in favor for, but nationally Michelle and other activists can only do so much to gain support. Much bigger waves can be made if we directly contact the powerful people like those in Congress who can pass bills and regulations if the public supports it! You should suggest the Wisconsin regulation or something similar to be put in place elsewhere or nationwide!

Unfortunately, we're only allowed to contact our state representatives and Senators via email, but I just tried this service on GripeGenie's website (www.GripeGenie.com) called Contact Congress. Instead of only being able to contact our state's representatives and senator, this site gives us access to all of Congress! It's easy to pick which leaders or committees to contact, or even every member of Congress!

We should really start acting on any issue we truly stand for where regulations and decisions can achieve what we're seeking. While posting on these blogs promotes a smaller virtual community, our message doesn't get to those who can really DO something about it! It just bothers me because I'm sure politicians can't or don't read all the article and blog comments about our issues!

The exact effort put into these blog replies and posts is all it takes to contact your state's rep/senator or anyone else in Congress via GripeGenie.com!!

Check it out and make a difference with your comments and ideas! Create the change you're seeking!

25. Oh don't get me started on the water. Do you know when fluoridation began, Mandrake?
1946. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works.

10. Controlling vs. Encouraging
I would agree that I wouldn't want the government "in my child's lunchbox" either if the regulations became extensive to control what is packed or bought at school for their lunches. I think reform in the quality and/or nutrition of food served at schools should be improved and maybe suggested items to pack in a child's lunch. This allows better access to food, then what parents or children choose is their responsibility.

I don't think stricter actions need to be taken specifically on what our kids eat, though. If a parent sends their child with 3 pieces of pizza and 4 chocolate chip cookies, they shouldn't be taken away because it is unhealthy or anything like that. Again, suggestions may be sent home to the child's parents or even a sort of optional trading program where kids trade their chocolate chip cookies for a slice of watermelon to earn some sort of reward - or something that encourages healthy eating choices but does not reprimand or control the choices already made.

a diet Coke to go with that....not so much sugar.

I don't mind them killing themselves, but I hate for my insurance premiums to go up to cover their preventable illnesses.

But really, don't they have a RIGHT to kill their kids...ain't this Amerika? Dammm Demoncrats!!!

20. I think I'd probably strangle the person
who tried to feed my child that crap.

BALONEY?? DO you know what's IN BALONEY? (and I'm not just saying that because we're vegetarians now - I NEVER EVER fed my kids bologna!)

and chips and DIET coke. DIET artificial sweeteners are some of the most godawful chemicals you can put in your system. If you're going to drink a "coke" - make sure it has REAL SUGAR in it. And make sure that doesn't happen more than once a month or so.

26. Did you ever see those "Lunchables" things? Some sort of processed "meat"
in a plastic container, along with another container of "cheese" and a third of crackers...It is so processed it does not require refrigeration and you are supposed to feed it to your kids for their school lunch. I am no vegetarian - my doctor put me on Atkins-but that stuff scares me just to look at it and anyone who would give that to their kids to eat should have the kids taken away.

I am sure they are sold by the ton daily...

38. I used to make our own "lunchable"
back when we still ate meat.

One reason was the quality of the crap in there. The other reason was the cost. It was soooooooo much cheaper!!

And I did it because "everyone" was eating them back when they first came out, and my kids was already "different" enough. So we had CUSTOM-MADE "lunchables".

Heck, I'd even use the top of the teaball to cut out the (good quality) meat into little circles. The other kids started complaining that they wanted custom-made lunchables. lol
