Pat Robertson's advice to woman with flirting husband: "Make yourself attractive, don't hassle him"

Pat Robertson tells woman to make herself look more attractive to stop ‘flirting husband’

Pat Robertson, the prominent co-founder of the Christian coalition and conservative television evangelist, has some advice for women: stay pretty.

In response to a caller Thursday who asked what she could do to stop her flirting husband who "loves to talk with other women he finds attractive," the 80-year-old minister advised the woman to make herself "as attractive as possible."

The liberal blog ThinkProgress notes that Robertson frequently stresses the importance of monogamy.

CO-HOST: Pat, this is from Anne who says, “My husband has always been a flirt and loves to talk with other women he finds attractive. He says he would never cheat on me but his actions are starting to get to me. What should I do?”

ROBERTSON: Anne, first thing is you need to make yourself as attractive as possible and don’t hassle him about it. And why is he doing this? Well, he’s doing it because he wants affirmation that he is still a man, that he is attractive — and he gets an affirmation of himself. That means he’s got an inferiority complex that’s coming out. And he’s not gonna cheat on you. He’s just playing.

But you need to not drive him away or start hassling and hounding on him, but make yourself as beautiful as you can, as fun as you can, and say let’s go out here, let’s go there, let’s go to the other thing.

Robertson's comment isn't that out of character -- he's routinely been critical of women, and feminism in particular.

3. Pat Robertson's advice to man with flirting wife: "Beat her with a lead pipe"
Edited on Sat Jun-12-10 02:07 PM by ck4829
That's probably what it would be, right?

Why is it that he always takes the questions from women with loose husbands and says to let him have fun, but never men with loose wives? Would it reveal a whole different side to Pat?

4. Blonde@Last to Anne: He is gonna cheat on you. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice--well since
you pay attention to Pat Robertson you may not have heard this, but it ends thusly: "Shame on me."

The second time his sorry ass was out the door and my divorce will be final any day now. Kinda sad but mostly :bounce:

7. So it's all about the packaging
Just wrap yourself up in nicer paper and ribbon and all will be well. How pathetically superficial.

Robertson is advocating women become decorative passive objects. Ugh.

I remember about 30 years ago there was a book out by some Mirabelle Morgan (I think) called Total Joy. It was chapter after chapter of how a woman should work to please her man. I read it () and then my husband read it. He told me if I ever acted like that he'd divorce me. Some men actually want a partner who has a mind of her own and is capable of expressing it. Doormats get boring pretty damn fast.

15. Over the years I have seen it that way
Example: Man cheats on wife, he is scum

Women cheats it is because the man was not pleasing her and he needs to do better.

That kind of thing in general.

19. Other examples?
Surely, "over the years" of watching you've collected more than one example. (And I'm no fan of Oprah. Her pimping of "The Secret" and its just world horseshit gagged me.)

22. Well, being she has been on so long should not be too hard
But then I try not to watch her (kind of like someone saying 'Rush is a bigot' when they don't listen to him).

Here is more:

"Additionally, some believe there to be a clear gender bias in many of her shows, and a double standard about certain behavior. Shows about infidelity, for example, focus either on the cheating men, or on the cheated-on wives. She never talks about cheating women, and only ever mentions it in a throwaway, dismissive manner. Likewise, she has done several shows about abusive men, including child molesters, but has had on her show women who've had "affairs" with boys as young as 12 talking to them in a very candid, friendly manner about their "forbidden love" story, as well as women who admit to killing their husbands, often resulting in cheering from the female audience at the conclusion of telling their story."

http://www.basicfamouspeople.com/index.php?aid=901

It is also more evident in the subtle ways she handles issues. Is it all the time? No. Does she hate men? No. But it is obvious to most anyone who watches the show that there is a tilt on the issues. It is her show so she is free to do so.

I don't keep a log or storehouse of info on her, nor did I on bush/rush/beck/etc - You come away with an impression over time.

If it helps you I can record future shows or do more internet searches on people who spend a lot of their time recording exact shows and analyzing them. But it just is not worth my time. It is the impression I have gotten.

29. Not exactly equivalent...
I don't watch her show (not my cuppa) very often, but in the last presidential election, when there was a very viable female candidate for the first time in history, she didn't just refrain from endorsing any Democratic candidate, but instead, campaigned with great enthusiasm for her chosen male candidate. I think her support was crucial (even game changing) in a pivotal state, South Carolina- when she went down there, and switched from that odd, faintly British accent she sometimes employs to her newly rediscovered Mississippi drawl, and declared, "South Carolina, I do believe he's The One!" (Not exactly anti-male, subtly or otherwise.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYjyU25bW3Y

Maybe there's a "tilt" (as you say) on the issues covered by her show, since she's a woman mostly entertaining women (thus, more likely to demonstrate a female perspective).... but she exhibits misandry equivalent to Pat Robertson's misogyny?

Edited on Sat Jun-12-10 03:04 PM by lpbk2713

Well ... outside of the Bush & Cheney families anyhow.

Robertson never even worked a day in his life on any real job.

And yet he feels qualified to dispense his "wisdom" at the drop of a hat.

just like if she gets raped it's probably her fault too. everything is the woman's fault. wonder at robertson's childhood.

Edited on Sat Jun-12-10 03:45 PM by SmileyRose
1. Stop calling an old man who hates women for marital advice.

2. Tell the husband the flirtations and little games he's playing to make you feel afraid of losing him are pointless. He stays because he loves you and wants to be with you or else he leaves. No games are needed. Whatever words are actions are required to get the point over to him do that.
