The Official Doonesbury Appreciation Thread - SIGN THE DU CARD That's Going To G. B. Trudeau!
Edited on Wed May-09-07 03:32 PM by Hissyspit

Hey, folks. For what he has been doing lately, in particular, but, as well, for what he has been doing all along these past six years, I've decided that it would be great for the Democratic Underground membership to show our appreciation to Garry Trudeau with a surprise acknowledgment, and I can guarantee delivery of a card of appreciation personally to Mr. Trudeau. (I wrote to him once back about 15 years ago and he responded with a nice friendly handwritten note that came in an envelope complete with an Uncle Duke postmark on it. This address I have now, however is new.) See what you think, sign on up, and enjoy this overview of his work over the course of the Shrub disaster.

Sept. 1, 2005

This week runs a series of Doonesbury strips, as you see below, communicating Trudeau's satirical take on Bush and his veto of the war funding bill. This Garry is doing, after a week of reprints from 2002 reminding Americans that the foolishness of invading Iraq was known to many of us before the war. The aforementioned strips have followed a week advertising the issue of impeachment via the Vermont Impeachment movement presented through his comic strip panels in thousands of papers across the country. BEFORE THAT he was calling out GOP hopeful Mitt Romney on his flip-floppery hypocrisy - and I haven't even mentioned what he's been up to in the Sunday pages.

This Week

The frequency and ferocity with which Trudeau has been satirizing Bushco and the right-wing in Doonesbury has increased of late, though it is NOT new that he has been on the administration's case since the beginning, as you can see from some of the earlier strips I am posting. Still, in the past few years, Trudeau's righteous anger and incredulousness toward the administration has been much more evident in his work.

I will take care of the creation of the card - it will be oversized, but not so big as to be a piece of annoying clutter (the hope being that it will join his treasured memorabilia) and I will take care of the transcription of everyone's name or username to it - like the "here in spirit" protest posters that inspired this idea. The DU logo will be printed on the card, as well an appropriate Doonesbury image of some kind, and a message inside (see my proposed text below). Roses have been the traditional gift of appreciation here, as most of you know, but also ... as many of you have pointed out in past appreciation threads ... they cost money, funds that could be given over to a good cause related to the concerns of the person to whom we are showering our appreciation. So, for those wanting to do more beyond just signing the card, I mention that you might please consider donating to one of Trudeau's favorite charity efforts: http://www.fisherhouse.org

April 2, 2004

Fisher House is a private-public partnership that is designed to provide "comfort homes" for family members of military who are hospitalized for illness, disease or injury." As it states on their website, these servicepersons and their loved ones must often travel great distances for specialized care. The program meets "a humanitarian need beyond that normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs," according to the website. There is "at least one Fisher House at every major military medical center to assist families in need and to ensure that they are provided with the comforts of home in a supportive environment. Annually, the Fisher House program serves more than 8,500 families, and have made available more than two million days of lodging to family members since the program originated in 1990." Trudeau himself, devoted one week of Doonesbury narrative to a visit to Fisher House, having Boopsie lodge there.

April 10, 2004

The Fisher House programs include Hero Miles, which has provided over 9,500 tickets to hospitalized service members and their family members, worth over $12 million, Scholarships To Military Children, and the Newman's Own volunteer award. Here is the link to donate: http://www.fisherhouse.org/contribute/contribute.shtml

This suggestion of charitable donation from the hearts and wallets of DUers, of course, brings us to the inevitable, required, proverbial and much-beloved... DU DISCLAIMER

The administrators of Democratic Underground have given permission for one discussion thread on this topic. The administrators of Democratic Underground make no claims regarding the legitimacy or illegitimacy of this fundraising effort. Permission was granted by Skinner on May 4, 2007, and the moderators have been notified. My contact person with the "Trudeau people" has guaranteed me that this will be a surprise for Mr. Trudeau (unless Garry happens to read DU regularly, which I guess is a possibility, but otherwise...!)

Oct. 11, 2004

Trudeau, a classmate of Dubya's at Yale in the late '60s/early 70's, said in an interview in Rolling Stone in August 2004: "The Bushies simply do not trust the people to get it right. So like the pigs in Animal Farm, they rewrite the laws that protect us all, in the middle of the night." Let's show this guy some DU love.

Sept. 28, 2005

Here is my proposed text for the card: "To G.B. Trudeau from the varied and multi-national membership of the Democratic Underground website: In appreciation of you exceptional work in the use of satire in the service of speaking truth to power during a critical period in the history of the United States and the world. We are daily inspired by your continued efforts at communicating with humor and through your characters our humanity and the values of reasoned and free-thinking persons."

April 27, 2006

Feel free to debate and suggest any alterations to my card message. I do realize, I might mention, that there are other editorial cartoonists and public servents who are deserving of our recognition, and maybe we can do something for them later, but, really, Trudeau is unique in what he has been doing with the media outlet he has at his command. This is not about hero worship (I, myself, don't always agree exactly with the sentiments or concepts communicated in his strips), but about appreciation.

Nov. 20, 2006

Please kick and recommend this thread so that as many people as possible get to see it and we can get as many signatures on the card as possible. I will check back later tonight and tomorrow and then we'll see where it goes from there. Thanks! - H'spit

6. More than the last six years, try the last 40.
I recently bought a used book of Doonesbury cartoons, and it was all about Nixon. I also remember him speaking (drawing) out about Reagan and Bush Sr. It's why he was moved from the funny pages to the editorial pages in so many papers, so long ago. Please add my name to your appreciation card!

8. I was recently cleaning off my bookshelves
and all work stopped when I came upon a book of Doonesbury cartoons that dated back to Vietnam and Watergate. Needless to say, that was a book that went back on the shelf and not into my give away bag.

Add my name to the appreciation card.

ESPECIALLY in the last six years, he's been such a comfort. At times, he was the only company we had. Thank you, Dear Mr. Trudeau! You told the truth long before it became politically chic.

I have been reading Doonesbury pretty much my whole life and I have never been a bigger fan than now. Garry is really nailing * and his godforsaken war. The Apr 27, 2006 strip is one of the most haunting he has done.

From VC Phred to singin' and dancin' Jeb Magruder, Trudeau is a national treasure. Give Garry my best and that a long-time fan salutes him and his work.

Thanks Hiss.

71. Garry Trudeau is what real patriotism looks like

"These are the times that try men's souls: The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it Now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict the more glorius the triumph." Thomas Paine, The Crisis -- December 1776

99. To be tired of Doonesbury is to be tired of life, to paraphrase Dr. Ben Johnson.
Please add my name to the signatures.

One suggestion re: your proposed message; I liked the description which Jonathon Alter wrote in Newsweek (either the 2/18/88 issue at p. 82, or the 10/15/90 article, pp. 60-66 - the footnote referred to both). He described GB (Garretson Beekman)Trudeau as the "premier American political and social satirist of our time - as much journalist as artist - an investigative cartoonist".

I was off-put by the phrase, "truth to power" because it has been so overused as to become hackneyed, i.e made commonplace or trite by overuse. However I googled the phrase and came up with this:

"The phrase, Speak Truth to Power, is taken from a charge given to Eighteenth Century Friends, suggesting the effort that is made to speak from the deepest insight of the Quaker faith, as this faith is understood by those who prepared this study. We speak to power in three senses:

(1)To those who hold high places in our national life and bear the terrible responsibility of making decisions for war or peace.
(2)To the American people who are the final reservoir of power in this country and whose values and expectations set the limits for those who exercise authority.
(3)To the idea of Power itself, and its impact on Twentieth Century life.

Our truth is an ancient one: that love endures and overcomes; that hatred destroys; that what is obtained by love is retained, but what is obtained by hatred proves a burden."

So I'm OK with "truth to power", although sorry that the phrase has been so overused. What about, "speak truth to those who hold high places in our national life and bear the terrible responsibility of making decisions for war and peace"?

Your post was an absolute joy to read. An appreciation card is an intelligent and appropriate thank you from us political wonks. GB has been a lifeline for my sanity by validating my take on life, never more than during the Vietnam War - and Joanie Caucus was my role model. Mr. Caucus: "My wife, I think I'll keep her. . . .Joanie: "I broke his nose."

Mr. Trudeau;
Not only have you inspired me for the past 6 years of absolute insanity, but you got me through the Nixon and Reagan years as well. Every time one of these Nimrods was elected I thought it could not get any worse ~ but I learnt there was a downhill from wherever it was. Well I would have thought I was the only crazy person in America if it wasn't for your sharp and funny insight to the ridiculous, hypocritical, and bazaar take on what some people thought was "normal." Thank you so much for all you have done, I hope you know that your work is as fresh today as it was 40 years ago. I love you!

128. We should have a Hissyspit appreciation thread
Thank you so much for this idea and the time you spent putting all of this together. I have been very grateful for Trudeau's voice for these past horrible years, especially during the darkest times of 2002 and 2003 when so many people were silenced by the * admin and media intimidation. He truly is a hero and a patriot.

One word I would add to your otherwise eloquent statement to him would be "compassion".

As in, "We are daily inspired by your continued efforts at communicating with humor and through your characters our humanity and the values of reasoned and free-thinking and compasssionate persons."

I sense that what fuels his work is the rage he has felt from witnessing so much disregard for human life and the consequences of all of the * admin's choices. I think it is his empathy for the soldiers, the families of the soldiers, everyone personally affected by what has happened that he is speaking for. I think that it reveals a big heart that is raging and he is trying to make a difference in the way he knows best.

Needless to say, please add my name to the list. I would be honored to be able to whisper at my gratitude in a way that he could be aware of it.

I think he has been the one constant political cartoonist of our generation!

I can't wait to see his cartoons every day, especially when the */helmet is featured. His strips with rummy were also great.

Thanks for your post... which also are ones I look forward to reading!

Please add my name to the DU card for Garry Trudeau. I have been a big fan from the beginning. He has done our country and our troops a great service by revealing the truth behind the Bush Administration's lies.

One of your many (and ancient) snarky takes on lawyers and law school is in my personal mementos: a big Sunday version about studying for the bar published the day I graduated from law school.

Thank you for all your fine work.

162. One of my favorite strips had the White House...
One of my favorite Doonesbury strips was in 1974. As part of Nixon's bunker mentality, he drew workmen building a tall cinderbock wall surrounding the White House. There was just barely enough room over the wall for the dialogue boxes between Nixon and his aides. Then after Jerry Ford came in, Trudeau drew a strip of the White House once again being visible - with the wall being demolished, the sun shinning and the birds chirping.
