Painter Thomas Kinkade arrested for alleged DUI

Famed Placerville-raised painter Thomas Kinkade has been arrested for allegedly driving drunk outside Carmel, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A Monterey County sheriff's deputy initially pulled over Kinkade's Mercedes Benz for a vehicle code violation Friday night, said CHP Officer Robert Lehman. After making contact with the 52-year-old Kinkade, the deputy suspected that he was drunk, Lehman said.

The deputy called the CHP to assist, and an officer performed tests to determine that Kinkade was impaired, Lehman said. The CHP officer arrested Kinkade just after 10 p.m., Lehman said.

He should have stayed from behind a wheel and got back to his imbibing while in front of an easel.

37. I've often thought that someone should do a Dada-esque collage of his worst "best" works.
Kinkade is so bad that someone could use his works in a different way to make a strong statement about the art market, popular tastes and economics.

45. Good idea but
I think whoever did that might be sued. The appropriation artist might win, depending on how it was done, but it could take awhile. Kinkade is the guy who's so "concerned" about his legacy that he puts his "dna" into each painting for authenticity y'know. Yes, it would make an effective statement about 'the art market, popular tastes & economics.'

I had a friend who owned a gallery. A woman came in and said she had 13 Kinkades and she needed something to go with them. The gallery owner politely but firmly said that she couldn't help because 'the only thing that would go with 13 Kinkades is another Kinkade.' True story from my neck of the woods.

# Protected with FORGERY PROOF DNA Encoding
Thomas Kinkade's DNA is encoded and visible on the actual canvas (near the signature) which will flouresce with Ultra-Violet light
# 24" x 30" Canvas
# EXTENSIVE Hand Embellished Oil Highlighting personally applied by Thomas Kinkade
# Thomas Kinkade HAND SIGNED using metallic ink
# Extra signature on stretcher bar in thick red pen (see detail) and Tom drew Christian fish
# Thumbprint of Tom on stretcher bar (only Master's Editions have these)
# Master Edition Seal on stretcher bar

Check out this $42,000 painting (supposedly):

51. semi-original
 yeah

In Kincade's case it means the paintings are done by factory workers (excuse me, apprentices) and then the Master comes along and puts a stroke or two on each, WITH his "dna" embedded. I'm not sure how the dna gets in the paint...

Kincade NEVER actually paints one of these paintings. He's just a tycoon--nothing wrong with that EXCEPT that he snookers the unsuspecting into thinking this "art" has value. It has no value --re. the future. It's worth about as much as those Chinese knock-offs. The whole thing is dishonest. I would say fraudulent, but PT Barnum rules Murka.

Here's a good article about Chinese knock-offs, which I compare Kincades to:

30. OMG that whole section makes him sound like a lunatic!
The Los Angeles Times has reported that some of Kinkade's former colleagues, employees, and even collectors of his work say that he has a long history of cursing and heckling other artists and performers. The Times further reported that he openly groped a woman's breasts at a South Bend, Indiana, sales event, and mentioned his proclivity for ritual territory marking through urination, once relieving himself on a Winnie the Pooh figure at a Disney site while saying "This one’s for you, Walt."<26><27> Kinkade has denied some of the allegations, and accepted and apologized for others.<27>

In 2006 John Dandois, Media Arts Group executive, recounted a story that on one occasion ("about six years ago") Kinkade became drunk at a Siegfried & Roy magic show in Las Vegas and began shouting "Codpiece! Codpiece!" at the performers. Eventually he was calmed by his mother.<26> Dandois also said of Kinkade, "Thom would be fine, he would be drinking, and then all of a sudden, you couldn't tell where the boundary was, and then he became very incoherent, and he would start cussing and doing a lot of weird stuff."<26>

also expect to see the fucking Brady Bunch come skipping out of the little rose-covered cottage being all cheerfully clueless and everything. Especially Marcia, whom I always wanted to slap silly. Just because.

Anyway, I've always felt that in creating the crap he did, he must have been trying to cover up something very dark and creepy underneath that he was too ashamed for others to see.

In 2005, the Points of Light Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging more people more effectively in volunteer service to help solve serious social problems, named Kinkade as Ambassador of Light.

He is the second person in the Foundation’s 15-year history to be chosen as Ambassador,
the first being the organization’s founder, former U.S. President George H. W. Bush
