Why does outrage fatigue happen? Boredom with wars and the gusher...
Is it a good thing or bad that humans can adjust so quickly? I think it is a dreadful thing - all tied in to eyeballs on the TV and selling products, which drives what the news shows or writes about. So with two endless wars going on and continuing loss of life, and a continuing environmental disaster that is killing even more - our environment, people's spirits, and laying bare the ugly corporate greed side of the equation, I can just envision the sea of people deciding they've had enough, so they tune it out or turn it off...meaning to them, it no longer is happening. Aided by the media's search for the next sensational disappearance.

I swear, our short attention span and lack of ability to follow anything through or finish anything is going to just drive things into worse and worse situations for the world.

1. Yeah. The willfully ignorant.
Many, maybe most, are unwilling to invest the time, energy and emotion into staying informed. I know that my friends, IRL, have become careful in asking me what is happening in the news. If they aren't in the mood to be hit over the head with the reality of suffering in this world, they will close down quickly.

I think a numbness sets in. We, as a people on the planet and as a society are very sick. We are diseased. Each day brings more suffering, and that is not an easy prospect day after day. Of course, it is not all bad. But, a serious and honest look does not make for comfort, ease or peace of mind.

2. I think it is
largely the result of the massive doses of social novocaine that is injected into the public by the news media.

3. Too hard to keep emotions so high
Outrage fatigue comes the same as the fatigue you feel when you run a marathon. You just cannot keep your emotions fuming at the same level forever or you would explode. I have to back away when all is futile, until I can find some way to make efforts no futile. I think the biggest problem is that all we hear is how bad things are, and do not hear "this is what YOU can do about it".
