Shrimper caught in restricted waters with 19,000 lbs of shrimp
I understand the need to make a living, I really do. Still I cannot condone selling poisoned seafood to unsuspecting consumers.

Coast Guard seizes shrimp from vessel found in closed fishing area

GRAND ISLE, La. - The Coast Guard seized approximately 19,000 pounds of shrimp 13 miles south of Belle Pass, La., Sunday, June 13, 2010, in a closed area due to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Coast Guard Station Grand Isle received information that the fishing vessel Little Andrew was fishing in the restricted area. A Coast Guard 33-foot response boat and crew launched and boarded the vessel for inspection. During the inspection, approximately 19,000 pounds of white shrimp was found onboard the vessel. The shrimp was returned to the sea.

"NOAA has implemented a Federal Fisheries Closure to ensure public safety by preventing any fish or shellfish from being harvested in the waters affected by the Deepwater Horizon MC252 incident," said Lt. Bryan Harrell, a law enforcement duty officer for the Eighth Coast Guard District. "The Coast Guard is working closely with NOAA Office of Law Enforcement and the affected fishing communities to prevent the harvesting of any adulterated seafood."

The master of the Little Andrew was issued a written warning.

1. There is always
a few assholes who are willing to ignore the rules as well as put their own profit above the public safety.

4. Though I believe he was putting the diners of the shrimp at risk
He was more than likely thinking of his family and the bills he had to pay. I'm guessing fishing is his livelihood. Again he shouldn't be doing that but I can empathize with his predicament.

9. Still, he shouldn't be putting the lives of other people, people with families, at risk for his own.
It was a selfish thing for the captain to do, and being that I live here on the Mississippi coast, I have no sympathy for those that put the public in danger.

20. Agree. I detest when the Chinese goods we eat here are the product
of their desire to put wages in their pockets at the expense, health and very life of my loved ones by selling us contaminated goods. I don't have even an ounce of sympathy for them. This kind of practice caused the ill health of my dogs, and lead me to completely eliminate all products from China from my home to the extent I can discover their origin.

The same goes for Americans who do this, ie put their need for wages above concerns for my health. Fuck them. I am not willing to find any excuse for this behavior - merely a motivation that I find selfish also. After reading of this, I am now going to eliminate more things (american this time) in order to protect my health, since there are some producers here who don't give a rag if I get ill or die over this.

End of the day, there is no one who cares more about the state of my family's health than me, so it is up to me to keep an eye on these things and change course where necessary.

12. I understand where you are coming from.
That was my first reaction as well.

However, it would probably be even more wrong to file criminal charges against him while the people who poisoned the shrimp in the first place are wandering around scot-free.

7. Maybe, just maybe this fisherman wouldn't have been out fishing like an ass if BP
would have hired him and the dozens/hundreds of fishermen/boat captains they keep turning away to help clean up the oil or lay boom etc. Not defending the guy for stupid/selfish but BP screwed him over and MAYBE BP hadn't offered him a job, like they haven't offered plenty of others.

17. There are some vendors that sell door-to-door and on street corners.

This is why I never buy from them. You never know anything about the product they are selling.
