there IS NO SOLUTION.

Only time, and benevolent neglect will "work". Nature, left to its own devices will do what it can, but the Gulf will NEVER be what it was..NEVER.. (at least in our lifetimes)

It's like doing cpr on a corpse.. the EMS people can try all they want, but once dead..is forever dead.. The buried corpse will degrade and perhaps nurture future life, but that corpse will not be made "whole" again, no matter how many people try to breathe life back into it, or how much money is spent on gadgets to shock it back to life.

1. Are they really going to capture 90%, though?

6. They said they were capturing 90% when they were sipping up 1,000 barrels

with that sippy pipe thingie.

Not believing anything till it happens and chances of it happening are slim, none and never.

11. Oh right, the first day it was 1k, 20%; 2nd day 2k, 40%; 3rd day 4k, 80%
the fourth day they said they were collecting 5k and people starting demanding the video feed which put lie to the stories they were telling.

12. We cannot trust ANY of their numbers
It's in their financial interest to low-ball the amount spilled and to over-inflate the amount "captured".

2. Sadly, true. The leak will eventually be stopped, but Obama
can't do it. He is a lawyer, not a deepwater drilling expert. He has people handling that who know what they're doing. It's a very bad situation, and the usual methods aren't working. As President Obama said, it's obvious that this well was not managed properly and shortcuts caused this disaster. We need to make sure that never happens again. President Obama said that, too.

3. Yeah, I think I agree. At this point prevention of a future calamity of...
...a similar sort is about as potent as the massive cleanup efforts that will have to be undertaken.

And still, even then, especially with this fucker still gushing...and the possibility that erosion from the pressure could eventually just make it an underwater volcano of oil for years to come...even then, it's still very difficult to tell if there's any way out at all.

10. I think the "people" need to be told, in no uncertain terms, that this will not end well
Edited on Tue Jun-15-10 07:43 PM by SoCalDem
Pie-in-the-sky, cockeyed optimism is fine for the movies, but this is a real-time nightmare scenario, and people need to be prepared for prolonged, and VERY expensive ecological breakdown.

There are people on the Gulf who will NEVER be "whole" again, and the sooner they figure this out, the better for them. and We , as taxpayers, had better get ourselves steeled for higher taxes and higher gas-taxes.

13. I totally agree.
This really is FUBAR, and people need to be told the truth. Obama cannot wave a magic wand and make it all better.

15. Never said to give up.. just to acknowledge that sometimes things are totally broken

This is not a movie...

It's not about "quitting"..it's about doing the best we can, and realizing that sometimes we cannot "fix' things.

17. But what you're saying is
There is nothing we can do, therefore we should do nothing.

We should stop trying to stop the leaks.

We should stop trying to collect the oil.

We should stop trying to clean the beaches.

We should stop doing anything at all and just give up.

sorry, that play isn't in my play book.

Edited on Tue Jun-15-10 08:30 PM by seabeyond
who said stop with that.

i did listen to people that have suggestions but all of them are concerned about the HUGE risk of making it worse.

when the odds are that it wont work, that it will make it worse.... do you try?

16. When I have a choice I base my life on truth. Without the whole
truth I find it hard to plan my life. He gave me some of the truth but what he did not say is the important part.

20. He could have fired Salazar.
He could have nationalized BP's North American assets. He could have announced a bill to tax the living snot out of the oil industry.

He could have done something.

Instead, he says he is going to listen and that we should all pray.

That is not very satisfying.
