NPR Poll Shows Tough Road Ahead For Democrats
Source: National Public Radio

"In a year where voters want change and in which Democrats are seen to be in power, this is a tough poll — about as tough as you get," Greenberg said.

Bolger said the poll results will be a wake-up call for Democrats, who were stunned at the beginning of the year when Republican Scott Brown won the U.S. Senate seat held for years by the late Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts.

"If Massachusetts was the first wake-up call, this is the snooze alarm going off," Bolger said.

He pointed out that President Obama's approval ratings are much lower in these competitive districts than they are nationally: 54 percent of the likely battleground voters disapproved of Obama's performance; 40 percent approved.

If you go to the actual link, this is very bad. Their methodology looks very fair and the results are very worrisome.

4. The type of methodology used cannot be ignored. I do agree you should ignore surveys about any
single race, however.

9. BW, I was in political polling for nearly 10 years. Most people are not
looking hard at any candidates yet, so generic ballots have limited usefulness right now.

It's better to have good polling numbers than bad, that is always true, but this time of year people - even those most likely to vote - just aren't thinking about the candidates.

15. No one will argue that things can change before election day...
However, one should pay attention to macro indicators... People like Charlie Cook certainly do

16. I know Charlie Cook and think he's terrific,

but he'll be the first to tell you this is a low-attention time for most people vis a vis politics.

Many states don't even have declared candidates for many posts up for election in November.

Reagan and Clinton had lousy numbers at this point and they got re-elected.

The Tea Party folks are getting Republicans nominated that have driven stakes in the hearts of 'Rockefeller' Republicans. Look at what happened in Connecticut - Republicans had a good candidate - Simmons - and the lifeforms that voted in the primary put up a wealthy crank that will alienated independents.

10. All of the media are caught up in a narrative frame of "Incumbent Rage"
Fed by operatives like Frank Luntz and his ilk.

Just means we need to GOTV and remind people how important this election is. The teabag types will be out in full force to elect their Ron Pauls and there Sharon Angles.

12. I agree with that... but we also cannot ignore what is happening. This election COULD be huge for
the GOP. We need to give money, time and effort and start doing it very SOON.

13. There is more than ample evidence that NPR helps to advance a republican ..
.... agenda. I have listened to NPR for over 40 years and over the past 10 / 20 years
there has been a subtle but undeniable shift in their work that helps paint republicans
in a good light.

"Look it was on NPR and they are liberal so it must be true." Just like bush / Cheney would
plant news stories in the NY Times and then they would quote the same stories to justify their
positions.

6. You need to watch Rachel Maddow's piece on so-called "Incumbent Rage"

on primary night. Most all the incumbents won their primaries, maybe one or two lost (I forget).

It is a fun narrative for the media. I get the feeling the media are trying to make it so.

However, this poll is not an excuse for staying home and not GOTV.

""If Massachusetts was the first wake-up call" - doubtful Scott Brown will be re-elected.

14. Hahahahahahaha you think Massachusetts was some sort of wake-up call?
All the MA race taught us was not to run dead fish who don't know how to campaign as candidates. Martha Coakley didn't lose that race because of her politics--she lost because she felt campaigning was beneath her.
