Ohio Man(30 years old) killed by his dogs in horrifying attack (9 dogs)

NEW RUSSIA TWP. — A group of dogs mauled and killed a New Russia Township man Tuesday in the driveway of the state Route 511 home he shared with his father.

Lorain County Coroner Paul Matus said Michael Winters, 30, was bitten “hundreds” of times during the attack by as many as nine of the family’s dogs. Winters’ clothing was torn off during the attack, which caused extensive bleeding, Matus said.

Winters’ father, Michael Kywa, frantically dialed 911 just after 12:15 p.m. after returning to his home at 48385 state Route 511 — between Quarry and Baumhart roads near the Henrietta Township line — from the store to find his son in a pool of blood.

“My dogs attacked my son,” Kywa told a dispatcher during the call.

Barker said authorities had no choice but to put down all of the dogs, which varied in size and breed, but included a mastiff and a Rottweiler.“All the dogs are going to be euthanised,” he said. “There’s no way to tell which ones were involved.”

"We believe that most of them were adopted, dogs that were dropped off for people that didn't want them any longer, people who didn't want to take care of them. I could tell by looking at the premises, the dogs were taken care of by the amount of food he was providing for them," said Dr. Matus.

The reason for the attack is unknown but Dr. Matus says dogs can take on a pack-like mentality in cases such as these.

The dogs were fenced in on the property. Deputies who responded to the call say the dogs charged at them. Two of the dogs were shot and killed on the property. A short time later, seven dogs remaining dogs were tranquilized and later euthanized.

Landscaper Steve Bungard works at the home next door. He said the dogs often appear aggressive when anyone approaches the property. "There was numbers of them that would come to the fence and scare you. That's the best way to put it," said Bungard.

1. AS MANY AS NINE of the family's dogs?
As in, they had AT LEAST nine? Sound like they were a pack before the fact. Would nine dogs snap at the same time?

:wow:

2. Dogs don't really "snap."

Aggressive pack attacks are within the normal range of dog behavior.

6. Something set them off. I wonder who fed them - was it the dad?

Maybe he was wearing strange clothes (to them) or he surprised them and they didn't recognize him.

I wonder how "familiar" he really was to them and if he talked to them before the attack.

3. I grew up in a rural area
we took in all the strays that were dumped.

But we didn't keep 'em all. Some were escape artists or roamers who left on their own accord. Of the ones that stayed, we put down any that repeatedly showed any signs of inappropriate aggression - whether toward people or other animals.

We controlled the pack dynamics as much as we could by culling the pack as necessary.

There was always a menagerie of animals. For the most part they managed to get along well with each other and the people who came, went and lived there.

What happened here is a tragedy. But you can't always keep all the dogs that show up at your door - at least you can't keep them together. They will pack up. Sometimes they become aggressive toward other animals and dogs. Sometimes people are their target.

5. Good memory - except in that case they didn't own the dogs
Updated 8/17/2009

A former college professor and his wife were apparently attacked and killed by nearly a dozen dogs along a rural northeast Georgia road where their bodies were found mutilated, authorities said Monday.

Preliminary autopsy results from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation showed Sherry Schweder, 65, likely died of injuries suffered in a dog attack, Oglethorpe County Sheriff Mike Smith said. Autopsy results for her husband, Lothar Karl Schweder, 77, were not yet available, but Smith said it's likely he was also attacked by dogs because the scene was so grisly.

Smith said officials were going to round up at least 11 dogs seen in the area where the couple's mutilated bodies were found Saturday morning by five passersby.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the mixed-breed dogs, which are to be captured by animal control officers from neighboring Madison County, were feral or someone's pets. There had been no recent complaints about vicious dogs in the area, Smith said.
