My puppy went to the Vet today
I have cooked chicken and rice for lunch since I got him, but for supper they would get dry Iams and 1//4 package of Ceasars, I checked for recalls on both brands, but Ceasars was never on the list Mars is the manufacture. Took him off all dog food, and now on prescription dog food and an antibiotic, the vet said the results of the blood work would take several days, because of all the poisoning. He is just very tired, and has taken the puppy right out of him. Just wanted to share.

1. The recall list just keeps growing
I hope your little guy doesn't have anything serious and that he gets well quick.

4. I'm so sorry
my 14 year old puppy has had a bad time of late. He picked up round worms a few weeks back and was really ill. Big Vet bills. I hope your pup doesn't have the bad food problem. Good luck.

6. He is a corgi, really healthy
but yesterday found blood in his stool, this morning there was alot more.
the meds seem to be helping, the waiting and what the vet said about all the poisoning is disturbing

20. I had a similar problem w/a kitten I adopted
There was blood in the stool. I had to take her to 3 different vets. Finally, vet #3 prescribed a drug which is a wide-spectrum parasite killer called "Panacur" which is normally used in horses and cattle and sometimes dogs/cats as well. The problem finally cleared up after 2 treatments of 5 days 20 days apart. This had been going on since October and was finally resolved in February.

I hope it is something like this for your puppy's sake! It is not detectable in a normal fecal screening for worms as it is a microscopic parasite that cannot be seen. Never heard of such a thing myself until this occurred.

Said kitten is now almost 1 year old and doing fine. I'm feeding only dry food to all cats as I've always done - Life's Abundance (they make dog foods as well as cat foods) and Innovo Evo as well.

All said cats are AOK FYI just to make you feel better. Let's hope it is a parasite of some sort.

I feel for you, believe me!

9. I've been cooking for mine, also! Wysong is my supplier... and..
I believe that they are truly ok for their dry foods; they produced their own dry food in their own factory in Michigan;I really believe that they are an honorable pet food company; however, they used Menu Foods for their wet food! I have many cans of that wet food from Menu Foods; I don't know what to do with it! Should I just trash it? It is not in the recall of the wet foods from Menu Manufacturing; however, I still do not trust anything from Menu; should I just throw out the cans of Menu meats that I have or should I just donate them to the local animal shelter? I'm really torn as to what to do with the wet food, that was from Menu foods manufacturing.

11. Don't donate it
I was wondering if there is going to be some sort of compensation.
My vet bill today was 250. that is just for the lab work.
The vet also said do not feed any wet food at all, none, because new recalls are coming in everyday.

13. I went through the same thoughts that you have
So I called the numbers on the cans of all cat food I was using or considering. Most are manufactured by Menu. But what's important is the ingredients they use. One cat food company told me they sourced all their own ingredients to make sure every thing was organic/human grade. So I took this to mean that each pet food brand can specify exactly what goes into their food. It's not like they slap their label on menus ingredients. At least that's what I'm hoping. I'm now using brands that don't have any grains - Wellness and Prarie. I understand Wysong is a good brand as well.

Half the food I give them is home made.

Anyhow, call the 800 number on the can, or email the companies and ask them just what up with their food. Are they testing it? Where do they get their ingredients? They all need to know (even the "good" brands) that we are keeping an eye on them.

14. Throw it out, Vadem
We threw out a bunch of Hill's Prescription and Wellness wet food tonight. I didn't like to throw the Wellness out but it's got chicken in it, and there's no telling if it's contaminated or not SINCE THE USDA AND FDA WON'T SAY WHO, WHAT, WHEN, OR WHERE!!

Mine are getting organic chicken and rice exclusively now.

21. You know what? You are right! I can't stand the thought that I might..
cause the death or injury of any other person's beloved pet! So I am throwing all these cans in the trash! Better safe than sorry, my Mama always said!

I am also cooking for my babies with organic chicken and turkey and veggies, and OMG, they love it! Check out Dr. Pitcairn's recipes!

22. That's how I came to the decision too
Those cans have sat in our kitchen for the last three weeks. I wouldn't use them. But I kept picking them up and reading the ingredients, and then the chicken debacle started. That was it! And I put a note on them at the curb: "Contaminated! Do NOT feed to your pet!"

Isn't it amazing how the little darlings wolf down real food? Our boy has always been finicky, but now he's often first to his dish. I use a book by a veterinary nutritionist because our girl has pancreas/liver trouble.

Good health to you and your babies! :hi:

25. All the best to you and your furbabies, too! A few years ago, when...
Edited on Wed May-09-07 11:39 PM by Vadem
the BARF diet came on the scene, I was very gungho about it! I fed my three Cavaliers that diet--the chicken necks and wings and the pulverized veggies mix that was recommended by Dr. Ian Billinghurst from Australia in his BARF book!..... My babies LOVED IT! Their teeth were sparkling white and their coats were shiny and silky! All of a sudden my little bitch started to have seizures!! I was horrified! The vets wanted to put her on the meds that they always use for seizures (the name escapes me at the moment); I didn't want to put her on those meds, so I stopped the diet I was feeding her; obviously, I was missing a major ingredient that she needed, because when I placed her back on the Wysong diet that I had always fed them before going on the BARF diet, the seizures stopped. So I lost my confidence in feeding a BARF natural diet to my babies. I know it is possible; I really feel that it is the very best for our babies, but I have lost my confidence. I will go back to Wysong dry foods, and will still add live foods to their diets. I still think that the BARF diet is the very best for our furbabies!

15. I have always believed the same thing
dog food has not been around that long, and we americans just fall for the convince of it all
Dogs, cats, birds, have been around along time, and without Purina.

16. Sorry to hear about your baby
Poor little thing. Blood tests usually take several days. In the meantime give him lots of cuddles and try to get as much fresh water into him as you can, that will help flush out his system. I hope he's well again soon.

23. Hope Your Puppy Feels Better by now
I never thought I'd cook for my pets! I have started cooking for my pets now and been doing it for a month now. I cook organic brown rice with organic chicken, add peas/carrots. My dog loves it. My 5 except for one cats are still being stubborn to change over to raw, fresh ground turkey/chicken with bones so it will take time. I am still doing research on making food for them all.

24. I've been sticking to Alpo and Pedigree WITHOUT gravy.
I've been reading the cans, and it looks like the "slices" and "chunks" with gravy are the ones with gluten in them.

I usually mix the canned with dry food, and I haven't seen any problems with my pup - at least yet.

Personally, I think "cooking for your dog" is going too far. For one thing, they have nutrional needs that - no offense - your cooking won't supply. I'll admit, I do give my pup table scraps, but those are treats that he doesn't get until he hasn't eaten his regular food.

Don't over-react. Your best bet is still to feed him puppy food, just read the label and make sure there's no gluten in it.
