Exclusive: ACORN leader says critics mounted ‘McCarthy-era war against the poor’ after report clears organization of wrongdoing

By Stephen Janis
Friday, June 18th, 2010 -- 8:17 am

The former president of the now-dissolved activist group ACORN struck back at Republicans, Democrats and even the Obama Administration Thursday after a federal report cleared the organization of misusing federal funds and election fraud.

In an exclusive interview with Raw Story -- her first public remarks since the report’s release -- ACORN's Bertha Lewis said the findings of the Government Accountability Office proves the withering criticism against ACORN that all but shuttered the group was an orchestrated right wing attack against the poor.

“This was a McCarthy-era style war against the poor and minorities, nothing more,” the group's former leader told Raw Story.

“This proves the right will resort to anything to maintain power to continue the war on poor black and brown people,” she added.

Demonize the poor while the rich steal everything that's not bolted to the floor.

2. K&R The greater shame on Democrats who joined the kneejerking that destroyed them
Fucking cowards, good luck on getting the minority new voters registered and to the polls and double shame for severing such a vital life line to struggling and at risk communities over Reich Wing shenanigans.

Sell out cowards and boo to the many, many folks around here that jumped on the bandwagon instead of standing with ACORN.

CHUMPS...be true to yourself and you'll never fall too far.

This will hurt the party and more so the poor for many years and it makes me fume.

4. “But there is no way there was not a racial element and class element to this whole attack.”
It wasn't just an element, as I'm sure she knows. Racial and class animus was the whole complaint against ACORN. It wasn't just the motive of the extremists lobbing charges against ACORN, but also the reason so many "ordinary", "non-political" people were so willing to believe those charges had to be true. All in all, a deeply depressing episode and another ugly proof that America's record of active hatred for the poor is unbroken. A begrudging "well done" to the rightwingers who pulled this caper. Goebbels would have been proud.

6. If it's any consolation, and it isn't
Rush Limbaugh seems to think that ACORN is still going strong. He even thinks ACORN is going to be in line for some of the BP escrow account money. Rush Limbaugh is addicted to mind-altering substances, but he receives a lot of money and gets to pollute the public airwaves with this kind of nonsense five days a week.
