HUMMER to be buried at Joyful Ceremony in Motor City
Source: Code Pink

Women’s peace group CODEPINK puts gaz-guzzling hulk to rest

When: Monday, June 21, installation happening 11am-4pm, ceremony 4- 6 pm
Where: Heidelberg Project, corner of Heidelberg and Ellery Streets, Detroit

One month after the last Hummer rolled off the production line, the women’s peace group CODEPINK will give the Hummer a proper burial. The art installation will include a real Hummer buried in the ground at the world-famous Heidelberg Project. The Hummer will be painted pink (to symbolize peace), and overflowing with plants, flowers and butterflies to symbolize a more sustainable, green future.

A team will be building and decorating the Hummer between 11 am - 4 pm, and 4-6 pm we'll hold a ceremonial memorial

1. I thought GM sold Hummer to the Chinese
I must have missed the collapse of that sale.

9. It didn't "fall through". The Chinese government blocked it.
That fact was heavily downplayed by our media because they didn't want people thinking that the Chinese government was responsible for "killing" an American brand. The Chinese investors were willing, but Beijing, even in their "pro-capitalist" current form, still gets the right of rejection on every deal.

The Hummer brand is too closely tied to the HMMV and by proxy the U.S. military. The Chinese government didn't care for the symbolism, so the PRC's Ministry of Commerce torpedoed the sale.

3. Apparently only a hundred people could fit in it and that wasn't enough.

6. Even the Chinese weren't that desperate and the Hummer is dead
although I'm sure Hollywood will keep a fleet of them to use as the ultimate asshole car in their upcoming thrillers and shoot em up flicks.

12. Don't worry about pollutants
Unless the grave is permanently guarded, that Hummer will be disinterred most quickly, and parted out for big profits.

8. A Hummer took a bite out of my Mazda Protoge
Edited on Mon Jun-21-10 10:02 AM by rocktivity
Went out of control across a highway median into oncoming traffic. Fortunately, I was in the far right lane, saw it in time to employ the zoom-zoom-zoom Mazda advertises, and lost only a tail light. If I'd avoided it altogether, it probably would have gone right over or through the railing that stopped it. Good riddance indeed.

10. Oof.
Looking forward to similar stories about the death of the Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Armada, too!
