2. Doing nothing makes Obama appear weak
in comparison to the military. No president, R or D, can allow that to happen. Nixon came close to losing control at the height of the Watergate scandal. Carter ruffled some feathers, and he was a former navy nuke sub captain. Obama is neither a retired military man, a republican, or a candidate for a cushy job in the military industrial complex. That's three strikes against him.

5. exactly
you can't publically denegrade in any way or form someone above you in the military. Obama must relieve him of his duties.

12. It is so clear of a choice, that I worry.
No drama Obama might try one more time, to rein him in. That would be a mistake. McCrystal's entire top staff has been indoctrinated with almost treasonous beliefs and actions. The fact that he permits that says a lot.

Obama has no choice. McCrystal must go.

17. Thats the disconnect friend.
He isn't seen as being "above" them, but instead seen an a minor obstruction in policy and dogma. Frankly, the President isn't really doing much to solidify the credence lent him by the office. I have no idea why, but it comes off as "please don't leave me, I don't know what to do".

3. Demote Him...
Firing him makes him a right wing martyr...he'll be all over the place. Bust him to overseeing flights to the Antartic or shuffling papers in some back office until he resigns...preferably AFTER the election.

10. My take, too. Altho my gut says he should fire the bastard ....
What I'd really like is for both Obama and Biden to take him apart in the WH meeting tomorrow. But Obama is a cool head. He's aware of the political fallout that will ensue if he get's mad and fires him. Besides, asking for his resignation is the equivalent of firing him, right?

6. Obama will compromise
and admit that he's unprepared and intimidated in exchange for no change whatsoever in McChrystal's behavior.

Same thing Obama does with congressional rapublicans.

7. I really don't think he has a choice . . . he has to fire him
this was clearly beyond the pale . . . bordering on (if not a clear case of) insubordination.

Anything less than being relieved will make Obama look weak.

13. that's an interesting perspective . . . he did this knowing it would force Obama to take action?
to what end? He wants to be fired? He wants to test Obama? He is sucking up to the conservative R's?

15. Maybe he has political ambitions, or ambitions that can't be sought
while General in Afghanistan.

He clearly has disdain for the entire Obama Administration. It seems to me he wanted out, but took a shot on the way out. He forces Obama's hand.

16. I don't think Obama will do anything..
Edited on Tue Jun-22-10 08:59 AM by Fumesucker
But what he should do is tell McChrystal to resign and then allow it to leak that the press should look into McChrystal's role in the Pat Tillman friendly fire incident cover up.

ETA: My thinking being that the Pat Tillman thing will keep McChrystal's head down and keep him out of the media.

18. I get a lot of huffing and puffing from McChrystal but not much of the
cool-browed long view.

Perhaps another person could serve in that role better.
