Legislators promote 'Interstate 11' with Las Vegas as hub
There are no north-south interstates between California and Colorado. This project would create thousands of jobs, both immediately and longer term. From the article: there is no federal money available for additional freeways... Let's MAKE some available and invest in our infrastructure and jobs, and not just war!

CARSON CITY — Large portions of U.S. highways 93 and 95 should be upgraded and converted into a new north-south Interstate 11 freeway, legislators decided Monday.

Members of a legislative committee studying logistics, infrastructure and transportation unanimously approved a resolution calling on Congress and the Federal Highway Administration to designate U.S. 93 from the Mexican border to Las Vegas and U.S. 95 from Las Vegas to the Canadian border as the future I-11.

Development of the new freeway would help Nevada become the distribution and manufacturing “Capital of the West,” the committee said.
We are trying to do what we can to create jobs for Nevadans,” said Assemblyman Kelvin Atkinson, D-North Las Vegas.

He said last week’s report that Nevada’s 14 percent unemployment rate tops the nation makes it crucial for the Legislature to do what it can to encourage businesses to locate or relocate in Nevada.

After the meeting, though, Nevada Department of Transportation Assistant Director Kent Cooper said that the federal interstate system has been completed and that there is no federal money available for additional freeways.

He said the cost of the new freeway would run into the billions of dollars....Maricopa County officials in Arizona also have been pushing for the new interstate, he said.

1. They just want to make it easier for folks in Colorado to get to
Vegas. More money for them. It's an Interstate without a reason for being.

3. I think you misread.

it won't connect Colorado and Vegas. It will more likely connect arizona, nevada, idaho, etc.

the "between Colorado and California" part meant in the vast geographical space between I-5 and I-25, not "connecting."

4. And people from the bay area.

We can go via I-80 to I-11 instead of having to take I-5 to CA-58 to I-40 to I-15, doglegging through rural central valley roads.

9. Right now, if you wan tto go from SF to Las Vegas
You gotta go out to Interstate 5, and take it all the way down to by Bakersfield, then take rural roads East to get to I-40, then go back north on I-15. It's long and does a dog-leg. If there was an I-11 that went from Las Vegas to Carson City to Reno, I could go to Las Vegas by taking I-80 to the Reno/Carson City area, then I-11 down to Vegas. Shorter trip most likely.

6. This freeway wouldn't go anywhere near Colorado.
Edited on Tue Jun-22-10 07:44 PM by Sebastian Doyle
It would run northwest from Phoenix through Las Vegas, and then up through the western side of Nevada, up to I 80 which goes through Reno.

The freeway from Colorado to Vegas already exists. Just take I 70 west until it ends in Utah, then go south on I 15.

As far as the long term proposal of extending this mythical freeway all the way up to the Canadian border, I don't see that happening. They might be able to go as far as building it along US 95 up to Boise, but probably not any further. If it was feasible to build a north-south freeway on top of the Rockies, they would have already done so.

Oh... and one more thing..... Maricopa county AZ shouldn't get ONE FUCKING DIME OF FEDERAL MONEY for anything until they get rid of that fucking Nazi Arpaio.

7. I'm with you on Arpaio.
The interstate can stop at Hoover Dam until that psychopath is out of office! :toast:
