She STOOD WITH NC'linians who were against the Iraq Ivasion and she RAN with SMALL DONATIONS without PARTY BIG SUPPORT!

Thank you, ELAINE MARSHALL! You were the UNDERDOG...and you were THERE FOR US...your PROGRESSIVE in NORTH CAROLINA!

I'm PUMPED! A VICTORY that went UNDER THE RADAR! SHE WON...and SHE's OLDER! EXPERIENCED...but a GOOD SOUL!

BTW...She's Running against the Chamber of Commerce, Big Wall St., Big Pharma Republican...RICHARD BURR the DOOFUS WHO VOTES LOCK STEP REPUG...!

This is a HUGE VICTORY FOR PROGRESSIVES IN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY! WOO HOO!

Oh...I forgot...she was in a Primary Runnoff against "Iraq Veteran Cal Cunningham" who was picked to run against her by DLC...and he had big glossy ads and huge phone bank but Elaine got support of Move On.org. and Daily Kos. Pretty Good for and Older Lady! GOOD FOR HER.

10. I really hope this gives "heart" to Grassroots Dems...that we can STILL DO GOOD THINGS...
even with little money but with lots of moxie....and even if the candidate is a good Dem who is left outside her own Party...but sticks with it...and did the work for Progressives that they REMEMBER and will REWARD with their Vote.

And, we fixed the voting Machines here in NC with just a few dedicated folks who managed to work to get Bill through the Legislature after Election 2004 to get "VERIFIED PAPER BALLOTS!" This is Progressives who did this! Even though our State is still very red...we still can accomplish much with the few dedicated who will do the work...the grassroots. And, thank you Howard Dean for giving us Money to Computerize our Voting Rolls for the Dem Party. Without you...we'd still be in the Dark Ages here!

6. Yipee!! Very pleased. My wife and I voted. My wife got robocalls from Wes Clark!
I got gladhanded by Cunningham at his campaign stop at the Raleigh Farmer's Market a few weeks ago...he is a shiny candidate, Elaine Marshall is the real deal. The right person won. Now we have to mobilize to send Burr back to his tobacco field!

8. Yes...I posted I got a RoboCall from Wes Clark here on DU..I was surprised at that...
Edited on Tue Jun-22-10 08:46 PM by KoKo
he would be calling for Cal Cunningham..

I'm so glad about this. She was there for us. Better than our former Governor, Mike Easley. She attended every Anti-Iraq function...even when Cyndie Sheehan came to Raleigh...she was there.

She's a good soul. She was and is NC Secretary of State...so she should have gotten support from DNC/DLC in this race. That she didn't an won is an amazing thing for Grass Roots Dems to have accomplished.

9. well
They do have a fairly secure way of counting votes in NC.

Touch screens like those used in SC were dumped and paper ballots brought in.

Congrats NC!!

11. We had small band of dedicated folks..(helped by DU Activists at the time)
Edited on Tue Jun-22-10 09:01 PM by KoKo
and also big help from two Dem Legislators in NC who had some sway and the ACLU to get our Verified Paper Ballots through. Without Howard Dean's help with money for better Computers for the Dem Party and dedicated activists who worked butts off (incuding a DU'er who won award from ACLU) for her heroic efforts it couldn't have been done.

Those were the GLORY DAYS of DU...we should remember that and hope we can do it once again instead of fighting amongst oursleves. But, sadly many of those early DU'ers are gone...tombstones and lack of interest by our Party later on with addressing VERIFIED VOTING and lack of passage of Bills by Congress and Senate that we were promised.

Still those days and those people made a huge difference.. We could do it again ...if we wish to, hard enough. If we could accomplish something in NC...then it's possible EVERYWHERE ACROSS AMERICA!

15. Yes, I recall those days
The way our votes are counted matters.

And DU still has warriors that don't think so. They think that Diebold is cool.

But the evidence is overwhelming that Diebold is not cool. That Diebold is crooked.

In fact, the DU heroine of whom you spoke, is credited with getting Diebold to pack up and leave NC because Diebold could NOT follow the new NC law.

tonight. And, Elaine gave a gracious speech about him in the race.

I hope you don't take my comments the wrong way. But, sometimes we Progressives here are in difference with the new DNC/DLC who pick candidates.

I'm glad you voted...it's not an easy thing to do in June when it's hotter than Hell..to remember to get out there. All of us who got out there, no matter who we voted for: Cal or Elaine should be proud we did it. So few even bother to care for Primaries and particularly for runoffs like this one......

 ...

17. It is great news for someone who "walked the walk" for us Progressives here in NC...
She was always there at every function. Functions that John Edwards always managed to miss...but then we know what sadly happened to him.

And she'll need more of our help heading into November

16. Yes...the real Grunt Work goes on. Burr will not be easy to defeat...
BTW..the turn out was much higher than predicted by our own State Election Director, Dan Bartlett.

That would be another good sign for Elaine's support.

21. Turnout was particularly high in Triangle and east, low in Charlotte
From the prelim numbers at the SBOE with 95 counties complete, it looked to me like her supporters did a targeted GOTV effort that was very effective.

Cal should never have called for the runoff; should have been obvious that Ken Lewis would support Elaine, as would most of the grassroots orgs, and that her supporters include many of those who always vote, no matter the election.

22. Commentary from the Pacific NW
http://www.nwprogressive.org/weblog/2010/06/progressive-elaine-marshall-wins.html

Progressive Elaine Marshall wins Democratic senatorial nomination in North Carolina
This is exciting news:

Elaine Marshall, brushing aside the support that Democratic Party leaders had lent to a rival, comfortably triumphed Tuesday in her second attempt to win her second U.S. Senate primary.

The veteran politician who has served as North Carolina's secretary of state for more than a decade defeated former Army prosecutor Cal Cunningham in the runoff, eight years after a similar nomination bid came up short. She will face Republican Sen. Richard Burr in November.
As of 8 PM Pacific Time, results were:

United States Senate, North Carolina (Democratic nomination)
Elaine Marshall: 60% (94,672 votes)
Cal Cunningham: 40% (63,290 votes)

Marshall and Cunningham were the two finalists in the Democratic senatorial primary held on May 4th. The results of that election were:

Marcus W. Williams: 8.46% (35,984 votes)
Ann Worthy: 3.92% (16,655 votes)
Elaine Marshall: 36.35% (154,605 votes)
Ken Lewis: 17.05% (72,510 votes)
Susan Harris: 6.99% (29,738 votes)
Cal Cunningham: 27.24% (115,851)

Marshall's campaign enjoyed strong grassroots and netroots support, winning endorsements from Blue America, Democracy for America and MoveOn. Marshall also had the backing of prominent local elected officials in North Carolina and well-known civil rights leaders. The results clearly show that she waged a strong and compelling campaign, and is the Democrat who has the best chance of taking out Republican Richard Burr in November. (Public Policy Polling asserts that surveys of voters back this up, by the way
