Anyone Get this EMail? "International Effort to Turn Off Lights on Feb1'st?

I just got this from a Progressive NC'linian...so I think it must be legit. The original email has the Spanish friend's phone, fax and e-mail who sent it to my Progressive Buddy. (I didn't include because of privacy issues).

Sound like a good Idea to SAVE OUR PLANET? A few hours a month? What difference would it/could it make? :shrug: I'm game to do it though. Every little bit helps to send a signal and save our Planet.

I received this message from a friend in Spain---

On Feb 1 from 19:55 to 20:00 hrs, there is a proposal to turn off all lights to give the planet a break. The proposal comes from France. If there is a massive response, the energy savings could be amazing. Only five minutes, and we'll see what happens. Yes, yes, we'll be sitting in the dark for five minutes like fools, but remember that there is a lot of strength in the internet and we can do something great. Spread the word!

So for USA eastern time that would be from 1:55pm to 2:00 pm. Thursday.

In large parts of the world it is either silly or a hard ship.

From 2:55 to 3:00 PM I had better not be sitting in the dark, lights on or no.

that's supposed to make some sort of huge difference in the world and all you have to do is stop doing something for one day or five minutes or whatever. Yet in reality it has no effect other than making the participant feel good and as if he did something. Slacktivist, in other words.

Like the "gas-out" emails that always go around when the price of gas goes up, claiming that if everyone avoids buying gas for just one day, it will send some kind of message that will bring prices down. It won't, of course, because it's not as if people are going to stop buying gas.

The only thing that will really drive gas prices down is if people buy less gas. And the only thing that will really help the environment is being more energy efficient over the long haul. But that would require a serious lifestyle change for most people. it's oh, so much easier to turn the lights out for five minutes or to avoid buying gas for a day.

one day...if we could all get our "act together" with the time thingy. After all don't they do New Year's Eve Around the World and manage to coordinate it?

It was a good idea from the Spanish Activist friend of my Progressive Friend in NC in "Concept." :shrug:
