French cannibal ate cellmate's lung in 'cry for help'
Source: Gulf News

A French prisoner killed his cellmate and devoured his lung after authorities ignored appeals for psychological assistance, he told a court as his trial opened Monday.

Nicolas Cocaign, 39, told judges in the northern city of Rouen that he had had a long history of mental problems even before he sliced open his victim, ripped out his lung and fried it on a makeshift stove in their cell.

"No one was listening to me," the bearded and tattooed detainee told the court. "I made several appeals for help, saying I was a man capable of being dangerous. I took action, and then they took me seriously."...

13. I dunno, I've seen plenty of sane people eat their cellmate's lungs...

Of all the organs he could possibly have eaten, I wonder why he chose the lungs. I can't imagine there was much substance to them.

17. How did he manage to make a sharp enough knife to cut open a human and remove a lung???
I have kitchen knives that I have to sharpen every time I want to cut something, and just cutting up a chicken is a chore. Or a cooked turkey for that matter, getting through human ribs has to be as hard as cutting off a turkey leg.

By the way since he is in France, you can rest easy- he isn't going to be killed by the state.

22. Because humans are treated differently than other animals.
Make bread, and kill millions of animals? Great!
Kill a psychopath? Ooooh, that's wrong.

I chalk it up to the lack of science education in western culture.

We're still learning that we are (as a species, and like all other species) stupid, dumb, random, experiments with nobody guiding the lab to not do stupid, dumb, random, things. We pretend we're different, that we're not as bizarre and savage as every other species.... until some guy decides to eat some other guy's lung, shocking us back into realizing that we are a stupid, dumb, random, species, and that's how we develop and evolve.

24. Foxes don't treat hens like foxes. Wolves don't threat sheep as wolves.
Humans don't treat foxes, hens, wolves, or sheep as humans. This has nothing to do with science education.

"We're still learning that we are (as a species, and like all other species) stupid, dumb, random, experiments with nobody guiding the lab to not do stupid, dumb, random, things."

Stupid compared to what? Dumb compared to what? What do you mean by experiments? The quoted sentence does not make any sense to me.

25. Chickens treat chickens like.... chickens.
They eat each other. They are violent, predatory, and cruel. Those who grow up in the city, without actual life science, think that eggs are a cardboard product. Those who have grown up with birds killing each other look at it differently.

Stupid: We reject realizing that we are a dumb, animal, species.
Dumb: We kill and eat each other, but don't discuss it.
Random: DNA and culture changes our species every day, with every new child, in weird ways.
Experiments: Every new child, and new upbringing, has new results. Is it Hitler? Ghandi? Who knows? Was the change their parents? Mozart in the crib?

We're a dumb animal species, thrashing about in the dark, trying to figure out a better way, while telling ourselves that we're civilized and much better than chickens.

39. Do you actually know anyone who thinks eggs are a cardboard product?
I hope you don't.

Dumb: We kill and eat each other, but don't discuss it.

Just because you miss the conversations does not mean the conversations don't occur. I have witnessed and participated in conversations on the topic. This thread recognizes the subject. Popular media in the US discusses the subject.

I do like the play on words, dumb = don't discuss it, since dumb can mean mute.

Random: DNA and culture changes our species every day, with every new child, in weird ways.

Just because we don't understand all of the variables affecting subject X, does not mean subject X is random. I am not sure if anything in the universe is truly random. For subject X to be random, subject X would have to be free from cause and effect.

Experiments: Every new child, and new upbringing, has new results. Is it Hitler? Ghandi? Who knows? Was the change their parents? Mozart in the crib?

OK, I can see how parenting is an informal experiment.

31. One has to wonder about the conditions in the jail,
that the man could kill his cellmate, gut him, and cook him. A makeshift stove in the cell? It sounds positively Dickensian.

35. Don't know anything about the French legal system
but, hopefully, the family of the victim can sue the hell out of the responsible party.
Destroy them financially, at the very least.
Placing a prisoner in a cell with a murderous cannibal is a crime in itself.
