6-22-2010:
"At the end of the statement a lone reporter called out "Mr President, can this war be won?"
The president didn't answer."

3. That's the whole point.

Generals no not simply resign. nor can a field commander fight a ground war with one hand tied behind his back.
The war being fought in Washington and the war out in the field are not the same thing. Certainly it cannot be expected a special forces expert be refined in the politics of war. Hopeful ambitions were merely that he would conduct himself accordingly regarding public comment. The only option the President had is to except resignation. That is what it was all about.

It was never about sending him back weakened or on a crutch. That had already been done by having one hand tied behind his back.

It's called forcing through a resignation.
And there is a problem. And there is no real remedy politically or otherwise.
This is about damage control right now.

We can't just pick up and get the hell out.
Very low troop moral is another damning issue.
And who ever is sent over there will have one hell of problem to fix.

Bottom line is ,nobody is irreplaceable, the general knew that too. That is why for the interview. The entire staff will be replaced ,and that is just what they all want.

It wasn't about being drunk and bold, it was all about resigning.

Common sense.

Do you think a general can just simply formally submit a resignation from the battle field?

2. Shy of genocide, probably not
Resource wars just don't wind down so easily and swiftly. They would have to do unto the Afghanis like they did upon the indigenous population of America

4. I am sure when his book comes out
even small worlds will merge into the big picture.
I imagine there is much to be told and explained.

I agree with the president in that sometimes no answer is the best answer.

5. +1.. was thinking if they really wanted to "win" this "war"
they were going to have to do some really despicable shit. Things we aren't prepared to do. Time to pack up and go home.
