2. I think he changed his vote. I'd love to hear Ben's excuse
for this dispicable vote! You can't tell me his State has low unemployment!

9. Instead of blaming Nelson and two Republicans
They blame the Democrats for not "fighting hard enough!" What was this "fight" supposed to consist of? Threatening Nelson's family? And that of two Rs? Supposedly that must be it.

11. Nelson should have been put into the 'rack'
Until he caved. Why didn't we torture his family? Democrats are weak! :P

7. I wonder: What Would Republicans Do?
Flip the circumstances. A lone Senator defects from the Republican caucus on a momentous vote that goes right to the traditional core of their party ideology. Do you think they'd ignore it? Or would they gang up on his state and cut off his campaign funding?

8. that would depend on the state, wouldn't it?
repeat after me: Nebraska is overall a Red State. It is full of right wing nut Republicans. Even getting Nelson is a miracle.

If you think Nebraska is going to elect a left wing Senator, tell me what drugs cause you to be able to imagine that.

10. Kerrey won out there
and while he wasn't a left winger he was significantly more liberal than Nelson.

16. During what years was that?
Before 911 gave the right so much support?

and yet withdrawing support from the Democrats is supposed to help the left. Stupid.

12. Democrats are not Republicans
So, that's a moot point. Using the tactics of blind-followers (of which you make fun on on the Dems side here) is an utterly ludicrous thing for you to suggest, if that's indeed what you think Dems should be doing to 'coerce' their fellow Dems.

13. Democratic leadership should strip Nelson of every function & never give a dime to him.
Why is the democratic leadership not getting tough with defectors? If it was the republican party the guy would be stripped of all functions, committees, everything and then he wouldn't get a dime from their party.

15. How has that forcing everyone to walk in lockstep worked out for the Republicans?
If I recall correctly it cost them the Senate, The House and the Presidency.

Yea, lets try that.

17. LBJ did it well and democrats did very well in congress until 1994, or 30 years later.
It's not how they did it, it was WHAT they did that caused their defeats. They destroyed the economy. They started two needless, unfunded wars. They created massive unemployment. And on and on. Don't you think THAT had more to do with their losses than strong arming did? They successfully held congress from 1994 to 2006, twelve years but their policies are what voters reacted to, not their strong armed tactics. People never remember how anything was done. They DO remember what was done.

Democrats are trying to do the right thing but they need to be a lot more tougher and or appoint stronger leaders who can actually lead. I recommend they all take a course in LBJ 101. Remember all of the huge programs LBJ got passed? Or do I have to list them? He had a lot of faults but he was a strong president and knew how to get things done in congress.

20. I agree. Instead, they shower love and support on filth like him, Baucus, and Blanche Lincoln
that tells you where their true loyalties lie.

If they cared about progressive policies, they would treat Blue Dogs and DLCers they way the GOP treats defectors.

18. No mystery here: Nebraska unemployment rate improves to 4.9 percent
Most Nebraskans work on farms. They don't have a problem with unemployment at this time.
