Fuzzy Math in the Gulf reporting
LOL, how can they report these figures with a straight face?

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE65O5TA20100627?feedType=RSS&feedName=topNews&rpc=401

Current official estimates suggest between 35,000 to 60,000 barrels a day are leaking from the rogue well. BP collected over 24,000 barrels on Friday and about 11,640 barrels in the first half of Saturday, the company estimated.

New equipment being moved to the site of the leak in the coming week could raise the daily collection rate to 53,000 barrels a day, U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen, who is coordinating the U.S. oil spill response, said on Saturday.

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Interior Secretary Kenneth Salazar are also scheduled to review plans on Wednesday for a new containment system that could boost collection to 80,000 barrels per day , Allen said.

Sounds like this new collection system can collect AT LEAST 20,000 more barrels per day than are being spewed. I want the patent on that process!!

2. The discrepancy in the numbers might come from the fact
that there has been oil spewing for a long time that hasn't been collected. Maybe the new 80,000 barrels per day collection represents the oil that's been there since day one.

3. the other "containment systems"
Are linked to the blowout preventer (wellhead). Are you saying that this new one is on the surface? That would be more like a skimmer.

6. From what I have read the flow is ~100k bpd. But that is Oil Drum speculation.

7. well, that's really the whole point
It's rather disingenuous, or at least ironic, in the same article to say that the official estimate of the flow is less than the official estimate of what will be able to be collected from the flow.

8. Well with BP and the USCG giving different estimates, then third parties...
its hard to tell what the true figure is, or even if the BOP will tip over and the wellbore will be shattered and the whole 2 billion barrels will flow into the ocean for years and years.

Lack of transparency and cooperation with the public... this is why our government thinks they can do whatever they want, because they answer to no one but the people they bail out of trouble.

9. Yeah
I just thought of the irony of the impossible numbers in the article, and all very straightforward, with no comment.

15. best case
Maybe they meant for us to see the irony between the official estimates, and the larger number of the amount to be captured??

In any case, I am glad that they will be capturing more. Call me skeptical on believing that they will capture more than they spew. If they do, whatever mechanism used could probably be retooled some way to solve all our energy needs.
