Pay ATTENTION America!
Edited on Sun Jun-27-10 11:41 AM by kpete
(quite telling?...kp)

"If Americans pulled back and started paying attention to this war, it would become even less popular," a senior adviser to McChrystal says.

9. And yet the war will go on!
Observers are calling it a big win for War in what could have been a near brush with peace.

11. it was never winnable
Bushler&Co. already knew that before they went in and stole natural resources, and left the mess to a Democratic admin.

6. I was telling my son,
the recently commissioned Army 2LT, that a big part of the reason that Vietnam became so unpopular was because we watched it every night on TV for years. This was in response to his claim that the media is "left-wing", and I was responding that if the media was really left-wing we would be seeing a lot more of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is in the right-wing's favor to keep these wars going, MIC and all, and that is why the networks barely mention what is going on in the sandbox.

He is heading to Ft. Sill tomorrow to start artillery officer training. We will find out in November what unit he will be assigned to and, consequently, what his deployment schedule will be. I want to see these wars on the TV news EVERY FUCKING NIGHT UNTIL THEN!

14. A heart felt hug for you
Awful times to be a military enlistee's parent.

Of course we are the media -far more people are on the internet chatting on forums like DU than are glued to TVs.

So that is one small blessing.

7. There's a reason MSM is not treating this one like they did Vietnam
Any of us old enough to recall the nightly news of that era knows that the powers that be want a see no evil, hear no evil, just go shopping response from Americans with this war. And they are doing a fine job.

No real regular news + no real (universally shared) draft = a nice, complacent population with a really short memory and damned little empathy.

And I simply fail to see how that has changed n the past 18 months either.

8. There is no "victory" possible.
Just like Vietnam, there can be no victory because we cannot define what victory would look like.
Is victory the installation of yet another puppet government? Is victory making Afghanistan the 51st state?
Is victory the complete extermination (read Genocide) of an entire population of people that we may oppose?
What is victory in Afghanistan? Is it re-making Afghanistan into a Euro-style society? Do Afghanis want this?
We went there obstensively to rid the Taliban. Short of extermination, which is not possible, how are we supposed to achieve this?
Show then the error of their ways? Re-educate them? Hearts and Minds?
What utter folly.
