15. There are a lot of people very comfortable with authority
Some fear any form of civil unrest.

For the rest of us, it's a choice between reality and antidepressants.

3. K&R'd. The police seem to be singling out certain individuals -- on what basis, I wonder?
This is v. important.

Toronto gets ‘secret’ arrest powers ahead of G20 protests
Friday, June 25th, 2010 -- 3:00 pm

TORONTO -- A government changes a law to allow police to arrest people without probable cause. It does so without any legislative debate. Then it keeps the change a virtual secret, until someone is arrested under those new powers.

The Soviet Union circa 1950? Nope. Try Canada, June 2010.

Civil liberties advocates and political activists are up in arms after it emerged Friday that police in Toronto have been given special powers to arrest anyone near the site of the G20 summit if they fail to identify themselves.

What's more, the government of the province of Ontario, which green-lit the new powers, didn't tell anyone about it until after someone was arrested under the new powers.

This has been happening all throughout Europe for the past couple of years

16. It appears that the Toronto Police was actually denying that they have granted the new powers.
Police officers are not employing extraordinary powers of arrest in securing the G20 Summit, but enforcing existing legislation, Chief Bill Blair told a press conference at police headquarters June 25.

The Chief responded to concerns that extraordinary powers were in place to ask people near the security fence surrounding the G20 to identify themselves to police officers.

The Public Works Protection Act provides search authorities that enable peace officers to ensure the safety of public spaces and buildings.

7. Not only that, but the police themselves
came out in a smaller group FROM DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE POLICE LINE. It's like certain "teams" of cop were ALREADY set to go after SOMEBODY as soon as they saw them.

These kinds of vids are invaluable when it comes to police tactics and, HOPEFULLY, how to counter these tactics.

17. Our Prime Minister, a Conservative, will face tough questions after the G20..
The conference is in downtown Toronto..in a lovely area of the city. Canadians will want to know why downtown Toronto was chosen as the place to hold the G20 instead of a site more easily contained.

Why are the police targeting some in the crowd? That's easy, because, after several days, they know the faces of the troublemakers. Many Canadians just wanted a peaceful protest..

But suddenly a small group hiding in the crowd, will put on black clothing and mask their faces, then dart through the crowd to break windows, start cars on fire, then remove the black clothing and blend back into the crowd.

Many people have been arrested, maybe 500-600, we don't know yet... but some Torontonians out to view the protest got swept up when things turned violent.

Downtown Toronto, in the area where the G20 is happening, is a pretty posh area, and lots of Torontonians live in the downtown area as well. The police would rather not use tear gas, because they don't want the residue of the tear gas to get into people's homes and cause breathing problems etc for the Torontonians who live there.

There are lots of onlookers also, just out for a look see... and some last night got caught up in sweeps by police as bad actors in an otherwise peaceful crowd, suddenly started causing trouble.

Interesting times, but when I see rocks hurled through store windows, and hear that the govt says the cost of replacement is to be handled by the store's insurance policy, well, maybe it will take Harper down a notch..

Hope so..

19. Every time I see those black masked idiots
I think of police provocateurs. They were already caught doing it at the SPP in Montebello in 2007, thankfully that time stopped from causing any harm or damage... except to their reputation.
