Bacteria Found in Reusable Grocery Bags - Wash those bags
A University of Arizona and Loma Linda University study found that nearly 84 reusable grocery bags, randomly selected, had a large number of bacteria in them.

More than 10 percent were contaminated with E-coli and half of those were contained with another bacteria called coliform. The bacteria levels found were very high and could cause serious health problems.

A possible cause is when people store raw meat or undercooked food and do not wash or bleach their bags.

Researchers say that these bags can be easily disinfected by running them through the wash.

Scary that this crap is on the food in the first place!

1. I'm too old to die young...
Wouldn't you have to wash them each and every time you went to the store? I would think there'd be more germs on the shopping carts, on the outside of the packages, on the conveyor belt, on the cashier's hands ETC. than just living on my reusable bags.

This reminds me of the news stories that report how good vitamin D is for you so you should go ahead and tan.

2. -1 for the environmental freaks
And this is why I throw my bags away (ok, not really but I'll rationalize it as such)

3. It's not necessarily on the food in the first place
If a tiny bit of meat you've bought gets onto the bag and sits there for two weeks, it's going to develop bacteria. It's not the food's fault.

But yowie. We use oilcloth bags, and I never wash them.

5. Well from the school of duh... Maybe if you leak chicken juice in the bag
you should wash it.

6. I've been washing mine just because they looked nasty.
This is a much better reason.

7. And that's why my reusable bags are old t-shirts with the sleeves and neck cut out
and the bottom sewn shut. Simple enough to throw in any load of wash.
