Poll question: Do You Commute by Auto, or Some Other Means, Work at Home, or Something Else?
I actually do work at home and am self employed (not that this is such a great thing), but I sometimes snicker when I see these accusations tossed about here that we are hypocrites because we commute. I don't commute, and I imagine there are others here who don't commute.

Thanks for participating in this poll.

600 miles a day sometimes.

3. Well, I want to meet and work for the DUer commuting by personal
helicopter! LOL

I'd travel by camel, eliphant or rickshaw, rather than auto, if I had the choice. Drive two to three times weekly 68 miles each way--virtually never drive the rest of the week at home, but walk everywhere.

4. I commute by car about 8 miles, each way.
It takes about 15 - 20 minutes, the same trip by public transit takes more than an hour and two buses one of which goes into some really, really Palin parts of town.

like meetings. Virtually everything I do can be done via email and the telephone. I've been self-employed since 1974. I've been telecommuting for my work since 1984. My driving has to do with buying food, etc.

9. LOL, helicopter and personal aircraft should have been a separate choice.
We all only wish we didn't have beat up cars. But then again, if we had personal aircraft, we would probably be Repulicans bitchin' about taxes.

15. Ah, but the point of the poll is
if you drive a car to work as opposed to the other listed alternatives, you're just as bad as the CEO's of major corportations.

You think you're taking a car trip, but the OP also wants it to be a guilt trip.

10. SAHM so I don't drive much. have put 30k miles on our car in over 2 years.
and it isn't actually 30k since there was 7k on it when we got it. i drive the kids to school and the park or library.

as for people being called 'hypocrites'.... we all need to get to our jobs and can't always get one right down the street. as for me, any job i could find would probably be at least 45 minutes away. sure i choose to live in the country, but really, i can't afford to live near a city or in a city even if i wanted to. which i don't. Everyone has different things they like. some people like the city or the suburb.... i like the country...

22. It is, most of the time.
No matter what, I get 35 minutes each way to spend however I choose. Usually I eat breakfast on the way in and spend the time reading. One of my favorite things is when I realize I'm taking it for granted--the down time, the mountain views, sunrise over the city--and look around! So beautiful!

When the sailings don't match my office needs, it sucks. (Taking the 0445 sailing is never really fun, and often there's a choice of being 5 minutes late or an hour early. Arg.) And missing the boat...that's the worst because there's nothing to be done about it. Gotta wait for the next one and be late!

All electric. And our electricity comes from gravity, not fossil fuels.

Short of moving to three blocks from your job, try to beat that.

27. heh. I hear you
I live about 12 miles from where I work, in a small city with reasonable housing costs. The city where I work is much more expensive.

I drive to work, but I've seriously contemplated taking the bus (which would require an 8 block walk on the home and and about a 2 block walk on the work end) - and just might when my 22 year old Toyota Corolla finally bites it (which I expect to be fairly soon). I have a 9 year old SUV, but prefer not to drive that every day to work.

Another option for me would be to car-pool most days with a coworker, as I live between her house and the office.

to get away from all of the interruptions.

Best move I ever made.

I am within 2 blocks of bank, post office and the biz - an easy walk unless bad weather.

18. Other
Lots of us are contractors or other service providers. Job locations vary, so we need to haul our tools and supplies around. I don't think of that as commuting. In my case, there is no way to avoid driving hundreds of miles a day, from one job location to the next.

19. I could see how a corporate jet, if used in a certain way
could actually provide better fuel efficiency, pound for mile, than a single occupant automobile.

Probably not in reality, but in theory...or maybe I'm wrong, I dunno. It just struck me as an ironic possibility.

21. I do not commute by any effective means. I ride the DC Metro.
Once upon a time, it was a pretty good way to get around. Now it's totally unreliable, unsafe and thanks to recent fare hikes, more expensive than driving.

Just swell.

25. I drive 10 miles each way to and from work. 10 minutes there and
20 minutes home. If I drive it it is 10 minutes from my house to my parking and a walk of two blocks to the office. If I take public transport I have to drive 4-5 miles to the train station, walk the better part of a quarter mile or more and wait for a train. 20-30 minutes after the train shows up I get to change trains then after that train comes it is another 5 minutes before I get to walk 8 blocks to the office. So public transport makes no sense for me.

39. I've never really been to the burbs there much
But I hear Metra is good. I've taken it out to Ravinia sometimes, and also the South Shore Line to visit a friend in northern IN.

I've lived in Chicago since summer of 92 and never owned a car in all that time. I look at a map of my city and see everything outside the CTA routes as "here be dragons" on a medieval map. ;)

Everything I need is here: all three of my jobs, food, music, etcetera.

46. I commute 12 miles each way- 5 days a week
In August that will be changing to 55 miles each way- but hopefully cutting back to 4 longer days.

It might use more gas- but the other changes that I am able to make in moving there definitely balance things out. Hopefully I will be able to save up enough for a smaller high mpg hybrid now that my boys are almost grown and I won't be living alone.
