Facebook took the Boycott BP page down.
No explanation, no nothin'

Linkage to the page's owner...

http://bayoulee.com/

Oh, and he just created a brand new page to keep the boycott alive...

1. Interesting...
I just "liked" their new page. Another reason, however, to delete my facebook account.

4. I'm waiting for a distributed, open-source replacement to take off.
It can be done, it would have a structure sort of like IRC, where anyone can put up a server, link to other servers as desired, only instead of being used for chat, would be used for social-networking stuff like Facebook is used today. That would take control away from the centralized, evil corporation, and ensure that it's next to impossible to take down. Remove one server, the rest take the load.

There are a couple projects that are supposedly in the works, but right now they're vaporware.

10. Here's one would-be-replacement for Facebook: Diaspora.
http://www.joindiaspora.com/

They've got some prototype code put together, they're doing it all open-source, completely distributed (essentially, when you join Diaspora, you put a Diaspora seed server on your PC, and talk to it through your web browser, and it communicates with other Diaspora seeds and shares status updates, friend requests and so on.)

Sounds promising, but it's still in the vaporware stage.

3. Gee, whatta shock!
I'm dismayed by the dominance of pseudo public spaces replacing actual public spaces. Facebook is a good example, and the removal of the anti-BP page provides an excellent illustration of the dangers of replacing public with private. Facebook is entitled to remove whatever it wants. They are not and have never been a public space.

Fascism. You're soaking in it.

5. Yet sites wishing for Obama's assassination remain
Or at the very least, stay up for months despite a barrage of criticism and potential investigation by the Secret Service.

Go figure!

9. That's disgusting...
Both for it's content, and the lack of literacy.

6. Search "Boycott BP" and you'll find OVER 500 pages on FB -
- so it's not the boycotting of BP that Facebook is objecting to or they would have removed all the Boycott BP pages. Possibly he set it up on the wrong type of page or was doing something commercial with it that wasn't allowed.

Don't know why but its obviously not the subject that was offensive to FB.

13. CBS took down their BP Segment on 60 Minutes
As one person said, Facebook isn't a real public space. It
maybe only feels like one. But it's Facebook Corporation's
software and they can do as they wish.

Did anyone watch the 60 Minutes special about the BP disaster?
They interviewed the last guy who jumped off the rig before
it sank. Yes, less than a month later, CBS removed the video
from their site.

However, it's available on YouTube for the time being. I
HIGHLY recommend seeing it. It's a real eye opener.
