Dear Skinner - we need a jobs forum please
So many of us are out of work, struggling, and wondering whether there is any relief in sight.

I've been out of work for 21 months and am ineligible for unemployment benefits. My husband works, but he is doing the work of 3 or 4 people because he is afraid of losing his job. My younger daughter is unemployed, my older one is a nanny. They don't know if they will ever have middle-class jobs in their lifetimes.

I've written to my congressman, Rep. Chris Van Hollen, about developing a bill to create a serious, substantial job creation program, but only got an automatic reply.

I would like very much to see a DU forum where people can talk about jobs, or lack thereof, share strategies and ideas, find out about job advocacy programs and just commiserate.

Would you please, pretty please, give this suggestion consideration?
Thanks for all you do,
LiberalEsto

45. Great idea
I do renovation work and if I knew I could hire a carpenter with a liberal viewpoint and a good set of morals and the talents that usually come with a progressive mind, I would definitely use that forum. I live in the south and am so sick of having to confront assholes with their radios blaring Limpballs and Becks shows all day. And while we are on the subject, is there any one else out there who would give up their first born to have the opportunity to meet Sean Hannitty in a dark alley.God I would whoop his punk ass!

Considering the economy, I think perhaps a forum should be in the free area. IMO. YMMV.

11. So many out of work in my town (San Diego), any help is welcome.
Every week I see people sleeping under the freeway on ramps, park benches, alleys. It just
gets worse & worse. We've got to keep these people who are still connected, stay connected,
so they won't join this growing community that has dropped completely out of things.

17. Bob Herbert's column today spelled it out clearly
Herbert wrote in the June 29 NY Times that Obama and the Democrats in Congress blew a golden opportunity to put Americans back to work right during the good will period right after the inauguration.

He wrote:
"Employment is the No. 1 issue for most ordinary Americans. Their anxiety on this front only grows as they watch teachers, firefighters and police officers lining up to walk the unemployment plank as state and local governments wrestle with horrendous budget deficits."

***

"It would take an extraordinary exercise in leadership to rally the country behind a full-bore jobs creation program -- nothing short of large-scale nation-building on the home front. Maybe that's impossible in the current environment,. But that's what this country needs."

Here's a link to a DU post with a link to the column:

If you need any tips on how to set up a job creation program, please read this DU post called "What FDR Gave Us". I nearly cried when I read this. My parents were immigrants who came to the US in 1949, so I never heard firsthand about the great things Franklin Delano Roosevelt achieved.

27. I agree. There could be a lot of synergy created!
Many of us work at home and offer services that could be of use to others in our community.

I have a small translation agency, for example. I imagine there are some on this site who work at companies that employ translators regularly.

Let's keep the money in our DU community so we can then spread it to work toward mutual political goals.

49. That might need to be a separate area
My goal is prodding our Democratic Party into waking up and doing something about unemployment on a massive policy level.

Maybe DU could link up with Jobs That Are Left for a jobs section. If you're not familiar with Jobs That Are Left, it's a Google Group at http://jobsthatareleft.wordpress.com/

described by itself as "... the premier Democratic job bank, for all employment levels. This job bank has been created to assist all democrats in finding employment in between campaign cycles. All jobs are left-leaning, so add to this accordingly"

I get email job alerts from them daily. Maybe this will help some DUers find work.

62. Not a good idea on a site like this.
I can't even begin to imagine how the moderators would be able to eliminate scams and all kind of nasty privacy stuff. The workload would be enormous for the administrators with no hope of being 100% right. It's not any different than letting people ask for money. It happens here occasionally but only with the admins consent.
Maybe a "looking for work" forum but you would have to be completely on your own when you reply to the PM's offering work.

I've been lucky to have acquired a job some 4 months ago (after a YEAR on unemployment) but I strongly empathize with the millions of jobless who have just lost all their benefits and the millions more each and every month who will continue to do so.

I predict that joblessness will be THE great issue of this election and may well be a turning poing for the Democrats, for better or worse, this November
