Citizens Against Religious Bigotry claims "zero sponsors" for Comedy Central series mocking Jesus
A June 22 press release from the Media Research Center (h/t Right Wing Watch) claims that no company is willing to sponsor a developing Comedy Central program JC, a show that controversially mocks Jesus Christ: "Members of the coalition wrote to more than 300 corporations that had sponsored Comedy Central programming in the past. The letters explained the nature of the program and stated how offensive the “JC” project would be, not only to the 83 percent of Americans who identify themselves as Christians, but also to many non-Christians including those who signed the petition....Not one single sponsor indicated their intention to buy advertising time on the “JC” program if the program ever made it to Comedy Central’s air."

Right Wing Watch responds: "So, has Citizens Against Religious Bigotry really managed to kill off "JC"? I guess that remains to be seen ... as does the effectiveness of their threats should Comedy Central ultimately decide to put the show on the air."

In the past, Comedy Central censored images of Muhammad from South Park episodes (2006 "Cartoon Wars Part 2" and 2010 "200"). So I wonder if they'll scrap the whole JC series too?

11. If you have a few thousand spare dollars, why don't you
sponsor a child's education or feed a family for a few months or send crates of Dawn to the Gulf coast? Why would you spend it toward presenting a negative at a time when people need a positive?

You don't have to believe in God or worship a Son, but, why would you spend money to hate what you don't agree with rather than spend money toward a positive - like helping your fellow humans or animals?

Sorry. I don't understand hate.

13. Hate? You've seen the show? You know the poster's motives?
And wouldn't the donation of money to the show be displaying a LOVE for free speech?

And, finally, I doubt the poster is actually going to send a few thousand dollars to Viacom.

That money could have been put to much better use too.

2. If you were in the business of making money would you air a program that had no sponsors?
Would anyone? Should controversial programs be aired for controversy's sake? Who wins? Who loses?

The Right to Free Speech is tempered by the fact that there might be people who don't care to read or see what you're trying to say. Nothing about the First Amendment says people should be FORCED to watch or listen to that which they do not find interesting.

4. Sorry. Am I missing something here?
.
Sometimes I miss sarcasm or facetiousness -- and it doesn't have to be
all that subtle for me to smack my big dumb forehead once it's revealed.
.
.
Who would be FORCED to watch or listen and how would they be FORCED?
.
.
They might be FORCED to push another button on their remote.
.
.
Even in a capitalistic society, in a capitalistic business enterprise...
there is such a thing as GREAT value in integrity -- airing it if "only"
to stop those with the dollar power from winning yet another "decision"
(or vote, hmmmm?).
.
Airing it out of principle rather than capital.

Hell... even freakin' LAWYERS, the butt of society's bottom-feeding
jokes, are often in the forefront with the amount and NONPROFIT pro
bono work they do.

8. "Airing it out of principle rather than capital." That is too funny. If you really believe that
then why don't you make television programs and air them to those whose principles you're interested in pandering to or trying to change rather than those whose capital you're interested in putting in your own pocket?

Seriously. Make a television show and promote it to the world. It really isn't that hard after all. Just acquire the equipment necessary to create it and air it, and convince someone to produce and direct it PRO BONO. Convince everyone involved in getting it to air that they should be working for the common good rather than their own self-interest.

Remind me if you will... just what are LAWYERS at the forefront of?

Sometimes money isn't the whole reason for doing things.

How in the hell would anybody be FORCED to watch one show, (on cable no less) regardless of whether it had advertising? :wtf:

Are the teevee brownshirts going to come and strap you into a barcalounger and keep you awake while it's on?

32. Here is one of the boycott leaders, on Obama at Notre Dame:
"To give him an honorary degree would be like Howard University giving David Duke a degree in racial politics."
Bill Donohue, speaking for the 75%, according to you. What is really funny is that other boycott shouters are actually associated with David Duke!
Did you know that Tony Perkins, from the group you are standing with here, is one of the Republican's witnesses on the list for the Kagan hearings? I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on that one, and assume you were unaware of the nature of the people you are claiming speak for you and for your faith mates.
For the record, most Christians do not agree with the likes of Bill Donohue or Tony Perkins. And I would never suggest that they do.

6. Well the claims of right wing religious bigots are all over the
map, many are unfounded, many are spoken for mere profit or slander. It is not, it should be noticed, Comedy Central saying there are no sponsors, it is a right wing religious outfit making a claim that is not validated by Comedy Central.
The language itself is dated, as cable shows don't always sell air time by show, but by channel.Sponsors, well, no show has actual sponsors anymore, just buyers of random ad time. The claim is highly suspect.

would be notoriously difficult, I'd think. For obvious reasons.

9. Actually, not at all.
And that is just an honest answer. 25% of America comes to 75 million people. Most of the 'cable news' that everybody thinks is so popular make money with audiences of less than a million. It takes a small percentage of the US to make any show or product a profitable idea.
And the ad time for cable is not sold by the show, but by the channel. You buy time on Comedy Central, not on a given show, most if not all of the time. The show is already sold, to its only buyer, Comedy Central. They have blocks o adtime to sell on that and other programming. In terms of the word 'sponsor' there is no such thing anymore. Just buyers of ad time. And buy they will.
Aside from all of that, my point is that the story is not confirmed, it is second hand gossip made to trumpet the reputation of this particular group of religious righties.
The 'pilot' for South Park was about a fight between Jesus and Santa Claus. A Christmas special. Review some of their material. Pious they and their audience are not. If they don't air it, it is because it sucks, not because it might 'offend' people. Comedy always offends someone, that is a goal not a thing to be avoided.

19. Buyers of ad time are not sponsors
And you are speaking of a broadcast network, the ways and rules in cable are not the same. We are talking about cable, not about broadcast. Different. This is common knowledge.
Sponsors of shows, that went out decades ago. A sponsor is not the same as a buyer of ad time. Back in the old days, a company or companies would pay for 'sponsor' a show, over which they exerted a great deal of control. This has not been the case for decades on end.

15. Well, at least they're only trying to cause an advertising boycott. You know, rather than
aiming to cut off people's heads.

"On 2 January 2010, a 28-year-old Somali Muslim intruder armed with an axe and knife entered Westergaard's house and was subsequently shot and wounded by police. Westergaard was unharmed due to security precautions in his house. He fled to a panic room when he saw the intruder standing in the hallway wielding an axe. Westergaard was separated from his five-year-old granddaughter who was left sitting in the living room just meters away from the intruder.

The intruder attempted to break down the reinforced door with his axe, shouting phrases like "We will get our revenge!", "Revenge!" and "Blood!" He failed to get through and was shot in the hand and knee by police officers who arrived on the scene within a few minutes."

20. Here are some of the glorious people involved in this
And I offer this so others can see who they are so they can have some context as to what they mean by 'religious leaders'.

Tony Perkins, Family Research Council president; Michael Medved, syndicated talk radio host; Bill Donohue, Catholic League president; Tim Winter, Parents Television Council president; and Rabbi Daniel Lapin, The American Alliance of Jews and Christians president.

Look 'em up. This is the batch some here are defending as being typical American church goers.

31. It can. But it always generates money and heat for the
boycott shouters, each of them will have a product to sell, an organization to 'donate' to, or even their very own show. The axe they grind is just an affectation.
Most shows in the market place are not helped nor hurt by this sort of nutter action, because it is so common, and it is always the same routine. They were going to bring down Disney, they were very hot under the collar about that. How's Disney doing? Just fine thanks. 9 years they did that.
Because some DUers are promoting this group as correct and speaking for them, let me post a quote from Tony Perkins:
Perkins June 3, 2010 described the gay civil rights movement as "a movement dedicated to destroying marriage, free speech, public health, religious liberty, and (after the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" repeal) national security"
Some DUers say that he speaks for them and for all Christians. Tony Perkins is on the list to testify in the Kagan hearings, by the way. The GOP is calling him as a witness. Funny how that timing works out, if you ask me.

Edited on Wed Jun-30-10 11:42 AM by Stevenmarc
CARB starts screeching like a bunch of wild howler monkeys and create a whole lot of buzz, a group of forward thinking companies get in on the ground floor at a good price, Comedy Central is happy with all the free publicity and even happier when the show airs and the numbers are huge due to the MRC whining, now the other 300 companies want in on it and the whole thing backfires in CARB's face.

30. Backfires? Are you kidding?
If that scenario plays out it'll be the golden ticket. CARB will ride that one-trick persecution pony to the bank, using it as an envelope and email stuffing example of the corrupt nature of society and the supposed hatred for good Christian morals this country suffers from. A show like this is good for millions of dollars in donations.

their base is their base, it's a constant, the only thing that changes is the golden egg laying goose. This won't entice anyone new to the fold it will only serve to distance the separation from the mainstream.
