Prediction: Boehner's "Change SS to retire at 70" will be a major game changer in Nov.

In a time when people are full of fear about their economic security Boehner gives them reason to be even more afraid.

It is unimaginable that anyone would say anything so idiotic before the election. Tomorrow every group that targets baby boomers is going to be out in full voice. The AARP will have mailings about this for months, Boehner just gave them their biggest opportunity to raise funds in their history.

It makes the "Apology to BP" look like a burp.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Boehner lose his leadership position over it, then again that would be way to logical for Republicans.

I can see extending it one year but to the age of 70? Are you fucking nuts?

Are you unaware of what is happneing in France when they suggested raising it to 62?

This statement is batshit crazy but its not unlike any of the other rhetoric we hear from republicans on a weekly basis.

If we lived in a world where the media did their job and the populace was informed this would be a huge deal, but we dont so it wont.

impossible for those over 55 to get re-employed after being let go after the magic corporate age of 55. It should not even be 67, as our system will resort to for a lot of retirees in the next 10 yrs. I have forgotten the exact timing, a senior moment, if you will.

I'd say yes, if it was something like "raise the retirement age by one year and use the savings for universal health care start up", but not for war. I'd be willing to make a sacrifice for something beneficial to other human beings. But war?

The GOP is planning on winning big by attacking incumbency. Anything they can do to make congress as a whole look effete, ineffective, out-of-touch or downright brutal can be re-caste to work to the advantage of a "throw out all the bums" campaign. Strangely enough, I would be surprised if Boehner's own seat becomes imperiled as a result of his idiot attitudes.

I have no doubt at some point in the future we will have some new graduated levels added to the system...

Something like:
Born after 1962 = Full retirement at 67 and 3 months.
Born after 1964 = Full retirement at 67 and 6 months.
Born after 1966 = Full retirement at 67 and 9 months.
.....
Born after 1990 = Full retirement at 70

Those that "opt" to retire earlier will get reduced benefits.

They (both Democrats & Republicans) did it once before they likely will do it again. :(

I realize probably a majority of people over 65 are still in good health, but common sense says it's an age where the body, and in some cases the mind, slows down. A person of that age might already have health problems that could worsen dramatically and suddenly, if forced to keep working in competitive fields with much younger folks. Maybe I'm off base, and no offense to all those over 65 who presently could outwork a 40 year old, but it just seems unfair to make it law those that are even mildly unwell to compete. The stress alone would exacerbate many ailments.
