Prediction: Boehner's "Change SS to retire at 70" will be a major game changer in Nov.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20009192-503544.html

House Republican Leader John Boehner said in an interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review out today that he would back raising the Social Security retirement age to 70 for those who will not retire for another 20 years.

The comment - along with Boehner's statement that the financial reform compromise reached last Friday creates a bill that amounts to "killing an ant with a nuclear weapon" -- has drawn the attention of Democrats eager to cast the GOP as uncaring about the problems of average Americans.

In a time when people are full of fear about their economic security Boehner gives them reason to be even more afraid.

It is unimaginable that anyone would say anything so idiotic before the election. Tomorrow every group that targets baby boomers is going to be out in full voice. The AARP will have mailings about this for months, Boehner just gave them their biggest opportunity to raise funds in their history.

It makes the "Apology to BP" look like a burp.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Boehner lose his leadership position over it, then again that would be way to logical for Republicans.

I can see extending it one year but to the age of 70? Are you fucking nuts?

Are you unaware of what is happneing in France when they suggested raising it to 62?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100624/ap_on_bi_ge/eu_france_retirement_strike

PARIS – Trains stood still and children played instead of studied as workers around France went on strike Thursday to protest President Nicolas Sarkozy's plans to raise the retirement age by two years to 62.

Neighboring countries suffered along with Paris commuters, as walkouts by drivers delayed or canceled trains from Italy and Switzerland. Some flights were dropped or delayed.

Boisterous crowds of protesters filled Marseille's port and wide Paris avenues, as unions staged nearly 200 marches in several cities over a broad reform to the money-losing pension system, part of efforts around Europe to cut back on growing public debts.

"Sarkozy, Don't Touch our Pensions!" read one banner at the Paris march, near a cardboard coffin marked: "Here lies Roger. He's 60, and he died before getting his retirement."

This guy makes Michael Steele look like Einstein.

I can't wait to see what Limbaugh says about this, lol.

6. I wish
This statement is batshit crazy but its not unlike any of the other rhetoric we hear from republicans on a weekly basis.

If we lived in a world where the media did their job and the populace was informed this would be a huge deal, but we dont so it wont.

8. A national strike in the US?
You kid me right? The last one was in 1952... there is a reason for this.

As to his comments, depends on a lot of things how that plays. but perhaps Tea Baggers of the older persuasion will go... GET YOUR REAL HANDS OFF MY SOCIAL SECURITY... yes I can hope with that crowd.

You do know many of them do not realize Medicare IS a government program.

9. Most employers don't want you past 55 yrs. of age, and it is
impossible for those over 55 to get re-employed after being let go after the magic corporate age of 55. It should not even be 67, as our system will resort to for a lot of retirees in the next 10 yrs. I have forgotten the exact timing, a senior moment, if you will.

12. this statement started OUT my blue day...and it was my
birthday, but I got some good cheering up from fellow DUers, but man, somedays, the BS is just too much to take. This is a real corker, or boner....

Seventy? Work until 70? So we can pay for two badly thought out wars???

I'd say yes, if it was something like "raise the retirement age by one year and use the savings for universal health care start up", but not for war. I'd be willing to make a sacrifice for something beneficial to other human beings. But war?

Will we never learn?

15. Except Democratic candidates tend to forget about such moments
. . . when running their TV ads and speaking in debates. Instead they take the defensive, over and over again. Remember John Kerry refusing to run ads about Bush's sitting in that Florida classroom reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar for 7 minutes after he was told the country was under attack? I do.

17. unless Dems bring it hardcore, this filters to "congressman", not Boehner
The GOP is planning on winning big by attacking incumbency. Anything they can do to make congress as a whole look effete, ineffective, out-of-touch or downright brutal can be re-caste to work to the advantage of a "throw out all the bums" campaign. Strangely enough, I would be surprised if Boehner's own seat becomes imperiled as a result of his idiot attitudes.

But I can only see such a stance costing the GOP in November. The timing's right, I think, that they may find themselves recommitting to SS in the coming months.

24. It doesn't surpise me. Full retirment use to be 65. Now it is 67 for those born after 1960.
Edited on Wed Jun-30-10 11:48 AM by Statistical
http://www.socialsecurity.gov/retire2/agereduction.htm

I have no doubt at some point in the future we will have some new graduated levels added to the system...

Something like:
Born after 1962 = Full retirement at 67 and 3 months.
Born after 1964 = Full retirement at 67 and 6 months.
Born after 1966 = Full retirement at 67 and 9 months.
.....
Born after 1990 = Full retirement at 70

Those that "opt" to retire earlier will get reduced benefits.

They (both Democrats & Republicans) did it once before they likely will do it again. :(

27. What about those with failing health?
I realize probably a majority of people over 65 are still in good health, but common sense says it's an age where the body, and in some cases the mind, slows down. A person of that age might already have health problems that could worsen dramatically and suddenly, if forced to keep working in competitive fields with much younger folks. Maybe I'm off base, and no offense to all those over 65 who presently could outwork a 40 year old, but it just seems unfair to make it law those that are even mildly unwell to compete. The stress alone would exacerbate many ailments.

Grantcart said: "I can't wait to see what Limbaugh says about this, lol."

Let us know if you hear. My guess is he agrees and won't go near it. Most of his listeners are middle class people. they'd like to think S.S. will be there for them, i suppose.
